Your pic of the bridge reminded me of the first time I set foot on the bridge of the USS Abe Lincoln. I expected a bigger wheel for some reason... I guess because they're big ships? But it's like normal steering wheel size.

Cool stuff; I remember touring the Nimitz as a kid and it left a lasting impression....it's extra special to have the VIP tour though! Got to love the .Net community!

Wow those pics bring back a few memories. I was on the Enterprise for 5 years (which was the only nuclear powered carrier older than the Nimitz) and then I was a plank owner of the Reagan. It's unfortunate that you couldn't get a tour down in the engineering and reactor spaces down below. The turbine generators and main engines were pretty cool to see as well as looking into the reactor compartments....well what you could actually see through the viewing windows at least. It's cool that you were able to get a tour....those anchor chains are something else aren't they?

He didn't take you to the reactor room? If he's still on the Nimitz when they come to the shipyard I plan to find him and say hi.

And, no he didn't take you to the reactor room. That stuff's classified. Was his office just off the mess area? That's where it is on the Stennis.

Wow!!! Very cool and way to go Greg! I was blessed to see an Aircraft carrier when I was about 10 (the Vietnam War, FWIW), when my brother was on it. He died a year or so later, so these bring back some awesome memories.

That's an incredible gift from FlyingGreg. I hope to show my kids something like that one day.

I haven't met many people from .Net, but the ones I've met have been incredibly generous. I got great seats at face value to an away game at Arizona from a great .netter, and I'll never forget those memories.

I had the opportunity to a personal guided tour by the Chief of the Boat of the USS Coral Sea while it was cruising the Indian Ocean. My crew and I was stuck in Oman with a broke C-141 and could not stay in country due to a status of forces agreement with Oman. The Coral Sea sent out a C-2 and brought us aboard ship. The catch was an experience not soon forgotten. Being senior enlisted I was introduced to the Chief and he escorted me to quarters and the senior mess and the tour began after that. The next day with newly arrived parts in hand my crew and I were launched by the catapult in the C-2. 0 to 120 knots in about 3 seconds. Great memory.

By any chance, was it maybe the ORISKANY?, I got to tour (per my cousin) it when it was docked in Bremerton, just before the U.S. got immersed in the Vietnam conflict.
I was on the way to being drafted a few years later, tried to go Navy, but wound up in the U.S. Air Force.

I remember when I buzzed the tower at over 400 knots at Miramar in my F14. I got into trouble for that and my RIO had to learn how to drive a truck. Shit was so cash.

Damn! As a matter of fact it was! But it was docked I believe in Alameda, CA.
