#1 Carroll.
If you are a Husky fan, you know you watched that team (USC) load up every year and then almost invariably Carroll would make some weird mistake along the way - they would stumble, and lose a chance for the national Championship.
The book on Carroll was always incredible recruiter/talent dev but not going to outcoach anyone on gamedays. So even though you were overmatched, you always felt your team stood a chance.
Couple that with Carroll's penchant to hire substandard coordinators, and I was rightfully concerned. Especially because one of his crappy DC hires ended up as a terrible Husky coach later.
But Carroll loaded this team up with high ceiling guys, then he got those guys to punch through the ceilings.
Then that team became a buzzsaw and won a SB, and damned near won another one.
Also - when we traded for Lynch I was happy. He was fantastic at Cal. But I didn't see Lynch turning into what was basically a HOF caliber player. (and should be a HOF player but likely won't).
#2 Wilson.
I never expected Wilson to extend here. It made no sense. The way that Carroll wanted to play wouldn't work for Wilson and the way Wilson wanted to play was rarely going to be OK with Carroll. Wilson would chafe at not being able to put up the #s he felt he was capable of. Also, Wilson hinted he wanted to be legendary and take TWO teams to the SB, that would mean leaving our team by definition. And Wilson was starting to go on things like The Nickelodeon Kids show, and he was basking in the exposure. It was clear he would want a bigger stage, and bigger audience soon.
Never expected him to extend. That was actually shocking when he did stay, because it felt like he couldn't be happy playing the kind of ball Pete would want.
