Executive of the year is supposed to be determined based on how well your body of work looks compared to the rest of the league. Bill Polian got six Executive of the year awards, and none of them were from the year he drafted Manning. Ted Thompson was executive of the year in 2011/2012, and did almost nothing of note that season to improve his team. Ted Thompson is one of the best GMs in the business, but giving him the award in 2011 was a lot like when the Academy gave Russell Crowe best actor for Gladiator after they snubbed him for L.A. Confidential.
It's an award that has a long history of being handed out lazily or stupidly. If Elway or Grigson win it, it would be very appropriate.
