This is a cornerstone type of player. You sign him after the season and build the D around him. Injuries could happen to Wilson or Wagner but you still sign big time talent.

We really gave up nearly nothing. A 3rd rounders chance of becoming a cornerstone player is extremely thin.

They are just too short

FTR, we do have a window of time to sign a deal with Clowney before he hits free agency.

After the end of the league year through the start of f ree agency we can negotiate with him exclusively.

I think we already had that chat with his agent.

I think that is part of the reason he fired him, then rehired him after he joined the Seahawks.

Obviously, if he is not employed by him or representing him - the Seahawks are free to have any conversation they want with him, right?

As for the rest, can we use him like we used Irvin? I don't know we ever really got over the loss of Irvin but him on one side, Reed in the middle, Ford, and Ziggy would be a borderline terrifying DL.

(I know he is undersized for a DE but so was Irvin & he seems to have a knack for keeping OL off him)

That is a pretty interesting and diabolical idea!

That would answer several questions when you give it some thought.

It would not surprise me one bit if that really ended up being true. :2thumbs:

Clowney is not undersized. His weight has fluctuated according to demands fro.255 to over 270.

If we "lose" the compensatory 3rd round pick it will be because there is a different player out there that we value more than the gamble of a late 3rd rounder. The only way this trade blows up in our face is if Clowney gets injured in the first few games, and subsequently retires.

Because the future is unknowable, this was a great trade.

And even then it'll "blow up" as in "we let a backup linebacker go that we otherwise wouldn't have."

The "what if he gets injured" concern is greatly overrated anyway. It's football. Players get injured all the time. It's the nature of the sport. Can't really count that into the equation much because you're risking that with 52 other guys out there as well.

This was a great trade. No caveats. :irishdrinkers:

And if that "3rd round value" turns out to be Mingo or Jaron Brown or Ed Dickson?

It's a small consideration, but it is a legitimate consideration.

Clowney and Ansah are almost the exactly same size.........6'5" and around 260-270.

It's one of the reasons JS identified them as the type of ends he wants, versatile freakish athletic but not undersized to get overmatched, yet can still pinch down and handle tackles in the run game and speed rushing.

All I know is they both can get to the QB and reek havoc. I can't fathom anyone not being stoked about seeing those two on the field at the same time. And if everyone stays healthy, our front 7 is going to be ridiculous.

Brady Henderson
@BradyHenderson
Jadeveon Clowney gets his old number: 90, which Jarran Reed has worn his first three seasons. Seahawks’ online roster lists Reed as 91, so those two swapped.

They shouldn't. Cash changed hands most likely. That's how these things usually go down.

Yep, and it's between them. I love hearing the stories about the bartering to get someone's number.

Pinch down like Baldwin did while Kearse gave progress reports in SB 49 you mean??

Exactly. I never understood why Doug took all the heat for that, the grossest part of the entire celebration was Kearse watching.
