Victor Robles throws bat at pitcher, likely to face suspension

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles threw his bat toward the pitcher after nearly being hit by a pitch during a Triple-A rehab game Sunday. Robles was immediately ejected and took a few steps toward the pitcher before the umpires and other players intervened. He later issued an apology.

Even with the apology, Robles is likely to face discipline for throwing the bat. Delmon Young was suspended 50 games without pay for throwing his bat and hitting the home plate umpire in a Triple-A game in 2006.

Robles claims he was hit by a pitch 5 times in 15 AB's. He was officially hit by a pitch 3 times. Either way, what's going on there? Why would a AAA team be intentionally throwing at a guy on a rehab assignment? Obviously it's possible that all those were unintentional, but that would be a helluva coincidence. I could certainly understand being frustrated or even straight up pissed off, but damn man, you can't throw your bat at someone. That could be it for Robles in 2025.

You can't throw a damn bat. I know he's frustrated, but you could seriously injure someone. He has apologized. Add all this to the fact that he just lost his mom, horrible timing. However, you CAN'T throw a damn bat. And if THIS keeps you from coming back to a team in a playoff run? Brutal decision.

I can't imagine there's any scenario where he doesn't get suspended. There's just no way baseball can let that slide. Fortunately it didn't hit anyone because it would probably be way worse if it did.

If you watch the clip, it looks really bad because he actually set his bat down before picking it back up and hurling it at the pitcher, which makes it appear more like a conscious decision as opposed to a heat of the moment reaction. Just saying that appearance wise, it looked like there was a brief moment there where he could have made a different choice, but decided to go ahead and chuck his bat anyway. It wasn't an immediate reaction.

But yeah, I have no idea how long he could get suspended for something like this. Like NoGain said, just have to wait and see.

Seriously though, notable discipline is a necessity for something like this, lest young guys everywhere start thinking it's "not a big deal" and start venting their frustrations similarly.

Sounds like he was getting ready to be called up.

He got hit like 3 times last season at MLB level by this same pitcher,
so, 5 times by one pitcher before he snaps.
It was a stupid reaction to throw the bat but given his injury, I wouldn't
want him charging and wrestling .. He'll miss a couple of games and has
apologized.
I look forward to his return to fire the club up.

Well, I think it's a pretty reckless and dangerous thing to do. I also think he's really lucky he didn't hit anyone. And I think the league probably thinks it's a big deal.

This is the main thing. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a fairly harsh punishment, because the league could look at this as an opportunity to reinforce that this type of thing absolutely positively cannot be tolerated. Or in other words, make an example out of him.
