This is an awesome signing he could help our pass rush. Pick up a OLB in the draft maybe a DT and a DE and we will be set.

"I just went on a Niners forum to see their reaction, and they immediately brought up the five Superbowls from the 1920's"

LMAO @ English.

Seriously, other than 3 tech DT and OLB, who the hell do we really need ? It's going to be EPIC, these games against the Niners this year. Hell, at this pace, I'm not sure the games against the Rams will be all that close. We'll crush the freakin Cards.

I'm almost hoping the Niners get cute and keep all their draft picks. In looking at our Harvin deal, it's actually ingenious. Probably less than half of our draft picks will make this team. Same with the Niners; both squads are stacked. Might as well use those picks as capital to get an elite player, instead of using the draft picks on guys that will likely get cut.

Love the two year deal, we get a productive player without losing our cap space. I can't believe the Browns gave Kruger 5 years.

Nickel back, another TE to line up that can play on the level of Miller, large inventory of kleenex when the 49ers come to town.

Do we need the Kleenex because we are so happy, or because they are so sad? Happy or sad tissues, which is it?

Can't it be both, that and the tears from from laughing at the Harbaugh sideline show.

Re the talk of cutting Clem, are we even able to do that whilst he is on IR or PUP? I thought he had to pass a physical before we could cut him, unless we came to an injury settlement (unlikely given what is left on his contract)

He was on IR, he is no longer He got paid for the year he was on IR. From what I read of injury settlements they only apply if you cut the player in the same league year as when they were hurt. Clemons got zapped in the 2012 league year, it's now the 2013 year. The NFLPA might have something to say if we cut him, but I don't know how much ground they'll have to force a settlement.

So hey, all those people worried about how Avril defends the run, don't.

There's a reason we signed Harvin for what we did.

Teams are going to be passing a lot against us next year. The run will take care of itself.

I was thinking this at first but with how short the length of this contract is I am no longer sure. It does end the same time as Clemons so for long term planning the LEO would be Irvin's to own or someone else younger developed. If the team went this route, I would think after they see how Clemons responds to his ACL repair. If he has to go on the PUP, they could cut him once the period expires?

Clemons would be 34 by the end of Avril's contract. He's not in the long term plans. Clemons was our short term option, and if I may risk sounding rude, it was a really awful short term option. 32 years old and fresh off an ACL.

Avril just replaced Clemons as the short term option. Seattle can keep both, but they won't pay Clemons $18 million over the next two years with Avril in tow. IMO, cut Clemons, sign Abraham, celebrate a masterful free agency. If Clemons is wise, he would accept the pay cut. The market for pass rushers is extremely weak and better options than him are hardy getting any action.

I don't think Seattle really planned on paying Clemons anyway. With Avril they know have a tool to help work their way out of the Clemons situation. If Clemons is a free agent, he's probably looking at a 1 year, low cost "prove it" type deal. No way he's worth a 2/18 type contract. By replacing Clemons with Avril and maybe Abraham, they eliminate the ACL headache that would hangover our defense next season.

As far as the 2 year contract for Avril, Seattle can always draft a DE in 2014 or hope that Irvin develops. They can treat Avril like a very nice stop gap. Maybe they sign Avril to an extension if he proves he's worth one.

No chance we cut Clemons unless he doesn't recover. We can afford him this year and since we won't need him to play as many snaps he should be just as effective.

Disagree. WE still have plenty of room available. No reason to get rid of Clemons. CArroll was just talking yesterday about what a great recovery he's making and that he should be ready to go.

Just like Rice added to the pile, Avril does the same.

Abraham is better, less risky, and costs less. Easy calculation, even if it's a cold one. I think at the very least, Seattle should approach Clemons about a restructure, but I would prefer Abraham outright given Clemon's risk.

What do you mean by dead money number?

That's what Spotrac says. I don't know where they are getting it from.

Dead money basically means money against your cap if you cut a player. So if Seattle released Clemons, it would save only about $3 million this year, but it would save over $9 million next year.

Ah, if we add Abraham too then I would agree Clemons might be gone. I didnt notice that part of your original post.
