Hard to disagree with Dilfer here to be fair.

We have a great secondary. But our D-line is a mile off San Fran's and we often don't play great defense on the road.

Name a defense that plays as well on the road as they do at home, though. I'm not defending our D-line, though I think once everyone's back and healthy we will see better D-line play in our defense than we've seen in many years, though that's just a guess; and a hopeful one at that. Regardless, *IF* we can manage to get a very good (or even elite) D-line, we will probably have a defense for the ages. We've got the only secondary in football that performs at an elite level WITHOUT a pass rush. Stick the Rams or S.F. D-line on our defense, and we'd literally get like 5-6 shutouts this year, and probably end up averaging 7-8 points a game for the season. Absolutely crazy numbers. Can you imagine how many passes defended and interceptions Sherman would get if we actually had consistent pressure against QBs? It would be unreal.

I can't wait to see how our defense looks around week 8.

Hey, it's not that we have a bad defense. I don't think he's saying that. But our pass rush has relied on one man (Clemons) for three years and he's currently working his way back from an ACL injury. When we play at home without doubt the crowd noise (far superior compared to most other NFL stadiums) gives us an extra few percentage points. But take that away on the road, and too often we've struggled to create pressure, we've been awful on third and long and keep getting wiped out underneath by slot receivers.

There are two things we really lack IMO. A really dangerous possession receiver with size and one beast on the defensive line who can make things happen in any environment.

But remember that the Panthers were marching down the field and were at the 5 yards line, when DeAngelo fumbled. Until that fumble, our defense wasn't looking good at all.Yes, I understand that our D. caused the fumble and it is part of it. But, did we need to give up so many yards?
Our offense actually sealed this win in Carolina, not our defense. We had plenty of time on the clock, but we made our first downs to kill off the game.
Therefore I believe, if Carolina had scored previously, our offense could have marched down and scored the needed TD to win it.
I give credit to our Defense for allowing only 7 points and 125 yards of offense to Newton.

Based on these numbers, I understand where Dilfer is coming from. Do you?

We'd have lost at Carolina most likely if we still had Bradley as our d-coord, too. Switching to that soft zone to "not give up the big play" at the end of the 4th quarter worked nearly 100% of the time last year. In favor of the opponent. You see how we kept our normal defense at the end against Carolina? Sure, we still gave up the big play, but Earl knocked that ball out to prevent it from happening. If we just keep sticking to what we know works well on defense, we are not going to have very many heartbreaking losses this year.

We'll just have to wait and hear what Softy has to say about that BABY! Hopefully Hugh's mic is on and at full gain!!

Local media is local media; about as well in tune as the area man (like me)
