Plus, let's be frank, isn't Dilfer a bit of a Niner homer himself?

Dilfer played 1 season for SF in 2007. So, why exactly, would he be a Niners' homer? You have some inside info?

Dilfer was born and raised in Northern California and has stated that he was a Major Niner fan growing up. So yes I would call that being a Niner homer.

Ouch. My original statement stands. He's a tool. Except let me add Irvin to my growing list.

1. Dilfer
2. Evans
3. Irvin

All are welcome, not many are accepted.

Hi, my name is Johanna. Call me Jo....so you think the GB/SF game was physical? Welcome to the Thunderdome hon.

Keywords being "home" , "Green Bay', "San Francisco" , "Seattle" , "physical" and "defense" as in actual. Which 5 out of 6 are correct? And which 2 switch the equation given the original 5?

Hehe...serious now, do you guys actually think Boldin will be getting no jam free releases and no bump and run like Green Bay? Soft they are....yes? It's not like they ever had Sherman do the Revis Island thing before. Remember Baltimore anyone?

Green Bay never played press and ran a 2 high defense because they aren't fast enough to handle the R/O otherwise.

They gave up 28 points at home. Seems like they were doing more physical talking than hitting.

Sarcasm is hard to communicate through text without that emoticon.

I wonder if FO has a home/road split somewhere for defense DVOA? Because last year we faced the best offenses at home, at least during the regular season.

Oh well. There is some truth to what trent says. We do have a slightly different vibe on defense on the road.

That's true for all teams though. He made it sound like we are crap on the road.
Exactly. What is getting me all twisted up is nearly everyone in the media is spinning Kaepernick as elite because he torched Green Bay. A team too slow to stop the R/O without playing double high and no press on Boldin. That's just a stupid scheme regarding Boldin. As MRob said on NFLN Sherman will follow him if Browner is a no go. And Sherman handles Boldin nicely as previous matchups prove.
I believe this is the best way to handle Boldin, because other than Vernon Davis, there is no one on the 49er team that is a proven consistent pass catcher. Green Bay could not shut down the passing because they were so intent on stopping the run. Bracket Boldin and have a safety on top of Vernon Davis, and unless the other pass catchers step up, that will probably shut down the 49er passing attack. The Seattle Secondary is tops if not near tops in the league in talent and physicality.

Dan Qunn and Travis Jones, to me haven't proven to be good run defense coaches yet this season. From the teams they came from, they weren't known as good run stopping coaches, their previous respective NFL squads in their previous employment were atrocious at it. What will help seattle is the Noise. The 12th man will really help the Seattle D because in the offseason Pete and Dan really made a big effort to get more defenders that can rush the quarterback. If the 49er offense gets pushed back because of illegal motions, offsides, and illigal formations -- it will play directly to what Seattle tried to build during the offseason, which is a better pass rush.

Here's the worrying part for Seattle, I think Carolina had the 9th ranked rushing attack last year while the 49ers had the 3rd. If Seattle gives up 5.0 yards per carry to the 49ers on Sunday, the 49ers have a good chance of scoring an upset. If Seattle overloads the run defense - which I think is more likely, the 49ers might have a chance of scoring through the air. The obvious ideal situation is to hold the 49ers way under 5.0 YPC. The 49er run game has to worry Seattle a little bit.

I've always had great respect for Trent Dilfer. As a man, as an analyst and as a QB coach. I am hopeful Dilfer was playing the role of contrarian with such comments. Good cop, bad cop (the way they do).

One poster suggested Dilfer is bitter because of the Hass handling and another felt he was bitter because he had to sit behind Hass. If either of those opinions are true, Dilfer needs his ass kicked. The Seattle Seahawks ONLY kept Dilfer for an additional year because he was dealing with a personal tragedy. It sure wasn't because he was a great QB. Trent Dilfer owes Seattle the same amount of gratitude he publicly bestowes upon Matt. I've lost some respect for the man...regardless of any role he may have been playing.

Not trying to justify what Dilfer said, but think about this for a minute.
How many games did our defense lose last year on the road?
Seattle @ Miami. We had the lead very late, Miami marches and scores, we lose a tough game.
Seattle @ Detroit. We had the lead very late, Detroit marches and scores, we lose.
Seattle @ Atlanta. We came back from the trenches and took the lead very late. Atlanta marches and scores, we lose.
Seattle @ Chicago. We had the lead late twice, and twice Chicago rallied against our defense and scored. RW had to pull this one out of the fire.
There might have been another game or two that I forget.
Based on these numbers, I understand where Dilfer is coming from. Do you?

We'd have lost at Carolina most likely if we still had Bradley as our d-coord, too. Switching to that soft zone to "not give up the big play" at the end of the 4th quarter worked nearly 100% of the time last year. In favor of the opponent. You see how we kept our normal defense at the end against Carolina? Sure, we still gave up the big play, but Earl knocked that ball out to prevent it from happening. If we just keep sticking to what we know works well on defense, we are not going to have very many heartbreaking losses this year.

No one goes to soft zone in a 1 score or less ballgame.

Then I direct you to watch the final minute or two of our defense at Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, etc.

Looking back, it's a miracle we still had the #1 defense in the league last year. No pass rush, and gave up leads more times than I can count. Well, if I couldn't count past 4 or 5, anyway.

Interesting...

While I would agree that the defense benefits huge from the 12th (what defense wouldn't?), I wouldn't say they are soft on the road...
This is the perception that Dilfer probably has based on a couple of lackluster defensive performances last year, but I don't think it's who this defense is... They seemed to fair ok against Carolina in week 1, no? Plus, let's be frank, isn't Dilfer a bit of a Niner homer himself?

*Dilfer is definitely a 49er homer.

*Carolina's offense isn't bad, but it isn't good. It's probably above average. I wouldn't say Seattle's defense is ESPECIALLY tough (they can be run against, right down the throat at times), but their secondary IS. The secondary is extremely physical, and yes they cross the legal line often enough, but physical play in the secondary involves doing that without getting caught. Front 7? Not the toughest you'll find, but they are definitely no weaklings. Back 4? I can't think of a tougher secondary.

They hit them hard a lot (see Eric Ried), but didn't wrap up. That was undisciplined, fundamentally unsound defense.

49ers did that on Green Bay's last drive just last week.

Hard to disagree with Dilfer here to be fair.

We have a great secondary. But our D-line is a mile off San Fran's and we often don't play great defense on the road.
