Throwing Deep

We must do it more often, especially early in the game. Russell has great accuracy and anticipation when he bombs it deep. What makes it even more appealing is the fact that our 4th-5th receivers!(kearse, stephen) can beat man coverage and stretch the field. Not to take anything away from our power running identity, because that's our bread and butter. None the less our quarterback is good at it, we have the personal to do it, so LETS DO IT.

On another note I was absolutely shocked that we didn't see Christine Michael get one touch. Considering the explosive big plays we've seen out of him so far, and the fact that Lynch kept getting stuffed, wouldn't that warrant at least a few touches? There's obviously something we don't know.

I'm guessing they want him to be more familiar with the offense and with blitz pickups and pass pro.

When Cable and Bevell are comfortable, we'll see him in there.

Thing is, Turbin has more familiarity and he's good at his role. He was effective this game.

Agreed 100%. I was screaming this at the TV for several series before they finally did it, which naturally won the game for us. Even if it failed, to potentially go a whole game without attacking a team like Carolina deep is inexcusable.

It was only after the pass to Kearsy that the offense started to roll.. cleared up a lot of mid field space and , well much better

I wasn't surprised by that at all. Michael doesn't have the pass protection ability (yet) to be a third down back and right now he is here as a junior/future Lynch. Harvin would have been our "create a huge play out of nothing" back.

Our running game difficulties were due to losing the battle in the trenches, and we did change things up as a result with those dump off passes to Coleman in the third quarter.

Funny I disagree. The long ball opened up as quick passes were utilized. To start with deep balls that takes time to develop will lead to sacks and turnovers. Move the ball quickly buy time for RW and then attack downfield

Honestly, i think the reason we dont see the long bombs more isnt because the call isnt there. If you watch the all-22, we run go routes a lot. I think RW just knows when to throw and when not to throw them. And sometimes, he also just doesnt see them (not joking about this one, i know we say his height doesnt matter, but it does show sometimes when you see some wide open outs). I think its difficult for us because he is so good at it, but part of that is because he doesnt just chuck it (ala Joe Flacco) and pray for his receivers to make something happen. He throws it when he knows they have the advantage.

Long ball was there becasue of the run threat and them trying to cover the shorter routes till we popped the long ball, we had not tried that all game up to that point.

I wonder if Pete and Bevell are evil geniuses though. As others have pointed out, going run/short/mid the first three quarters may have lulled the Panthers' weak secondary into complacence. I mean, it was all Dougie / Tate for three quarters and then, boom, a go route to Williams and another to Kearse. Maybe it was RW, maybe it was just the situation ... but don't discount the evil genius theory. A strong 2nd half performance is often due to coaching adjustments, and we sure seem to have a lot of those strong 2nd half performances.

Need more time to throw the deep ball. Pass pro was pretty bad until about the 4th quarter. Usually Wilson buys more time with his feet, but Carolina did a good job of containing him.

I will never, ever, tire of watching Russell uncork 40 yard bombs. It truly is a thing of beauty, and he does it with such apparent ease and accuracy.

Going back to back w/the long ball was huge. On another note, passing from the end zone....not so much.
