Opening Take

This was a win but not a reassuring one.

Seattle escaped with a gritty victory over the Colts, surviving on discipline, defense, and the right leg of Jason Myers. The Seahawks repeatedly moved the ball into scoring position but could not finish drives, settling for field goals instead of touchdowns. Six field goals will keep you alive in December, but they won’t carry you far if the offense can’t cash in when it matters most.

The defense once again showed it can shoulder the load and protect a narrow margin, and that matters as the calendar turns. But as the stakes rise, the margin shrinks. This game felt less like a celebration and more like a reminder , Seattle is winning but it still has something critical to prove.

With momentum swinging late and Indianapolis threatening to steal the game after drilling a 60 yard field goal, Seattle needed one composed moment. Jason Myers delivered it.

Myers answered with ice in his veins, drilling a 56 yard field goal with under 20 seconds remaining, flipping a tense fourth quarter into an 18-16 Seahawks lead. It wasn’t pretty, but it was clutch and it underscored exactly how thin the margin was all afternoon.

Once again, the defense held firm when the margin was tight. They kept the Colts from pulling away and made the key stops needed to let special teams decide the outcome.

Seattle did what good teams have to do in December survive, stack the win, and keep the season alive. But let’s be clear kicking six field goals is not a sustainable formula, especially with what’s coming next. The inability to finish drives and put the ball in the end zone is disappointing, and it leaves far too much margin for error against elite competition.

Which brings us to the elephant in the room ,the Rams game is enormous. Season defining. Division shaping. This wasn’t a style points win it was a get right or get exposed moment heading into a matchup that will likely decide playoff positioning. You will not beat the Rams trading touchdowns for field goals.

The defense continues to show it can carry this team when needed, and that matters a lot in January football. But the offense has to match that urgency. If Seattle wants to be more than a playoff participant and actually be a threat, finishing drives isn’t optional anymore. The margin is gone. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

The media would have you believe Rivers had something to do with the Colts keeping the game close and winnable. In actuality, he held their offense back.

The Colts defense is tough, and only a fool or someone not paying attention would believe otherwise. They rank 6th in the NFL in rushing defense, 11th in Redzone defense, and middle of the pack in most other categories. They played inspired, hard nosed football, with the help of the referees thanks to the NFL and their obvious steering attempt.

The redzone woes stem from two things. Their insistence on being a good redzone rushing team and their inability to be one.

In theory, Macdonald is right that they need to have a good rushing attack in the redzone to finish off drives. In practice, it's not really the case. They are not good at it, especially when they are trying to run it inside against teams with good fronts.

So they have to adjust based on what they are good at instead of trying to force the same thing over and over, while wasting downs trying to figure it out.

This is where the coaches need to realize, OK, we are not good at X. So therefore, we must try Y. Instead of spamming the X button over and over again.

I've thought this during the times when we have a third and three or something like that. I get that you want to get the run going, but when you have to get a first down you want the ball in the hands of the playmakers. In our case, that's the QB and receivers, especially JSN. Sometimes doing the expected will have a better chance of success than trying to "surprise" the defense with a rush attempt.
