The million dollar question is this....can Tate play the X position effectively enough to be a #1 WR without a big guy like Rice? If Harvin and Tate get the most snaps at the WR position, do we have enough balance? I believe you've got to have a guy with a catch radius big enough to force the ball into when you need a first down or TD. If we pay Tate and Harvin, can we find that guy another way, or does the extension of Tate prohibit us from finding that guy?
Tate and Harvin are redundant because they both are at their best running screens and other short routes, and running after the catch. The position they play isn't incredibly relevant. They'll both get moved around plenty. I know Golden is better down the field than Harvin, but as good as Golden is, he still isn't the ideal guy for those situations. I can't think of a historically annually potent passing attack that didn't have a big WR as one of their top guys.
