Galloway was the only Seahawk jersey I owned up until I got a Russell Wilson this year. The sting I felt when Galloway left made me uneasy about buying a jersey ever since, but Wilson broke me out of it.

Joey Galloway was my first favorite Seahawk and the reason I wore #84 playing TE in junior high. His departure left a sour taste in my mouth too. It was kind of overshadowed by Jr and The big Unit though. All three left around the same time.

My Seahawks jerseys I've owned go like this: Rick Mirer, Joey Galloway, Shawn Springs, Shaun Alexander, Lofa Tatupu, and Russell Wilson.

It saddens me that, since I was born in 83, I never got to see his greatness.

I'm with you there. I was born in '82 and though I watched the Hawks growing up, really don't remember watching him. I envy Hawkstorian and the people who could watch a player over their entire career (with the very notable exception of my favorite player Cortez) Free agency has robbed us younger fans of that chance. As much as they love being here, I don't see any of our current guys being here until they retire (including Russell).

My family moved to Seattle in 1983 when I was 12 years old, in the era of Curt Warner, Chuck Knox, Dave Krieg and the great Steve Largent. He was my hero as a kid, too. I HATED the idea that the Hawks would let Rice wear his number, even for a short time.

Like Wilson, Largent was overlooked his entire career. Too small and too slow to succeed in the NFL, Largent was the Cal Ripken Jr. of football. Drafted in the 4th round and completely written off by the Oilers, he went on to be one of the greatest WRs to ever play the game.

And who doesn't remember this???

I only got to watch Steve for 2 seasons really, 88 & 89. But it feels like so much more than that. He was the Seahawks for me. He was football for me. He's why I wanted to be a WR and why I wanted to wear #80 and why Hass and Marshawn are only my 2nd and 3rd favorite Hawks of all time.

Well said, 'Storian. I agree with everything you said and share your sentiments completely.

80 should have been as pure as 12 is. I will never get over the fact that Rice wore 80.

Agreed, but it's always been ours and always will be. 80 should have been the same.

Well, not really true. Sam Adkins wore #12 back in the day.

So that should be a clue that I'm an old-timer. I was 5 years old when the Hawks were born and really did start watching pretty much from day 1. Largent was and is all those things 'storian says. He was a hero to those of us growing up in the 70s/80s. He had no business being that great but he was, no doubt about it. Griffey and Russell are on that level. Probably about it, though I loved Gus Williams as a kid and then GP later on.

Russell is clearly on the arc to be something unlike anything but Largent though. You can just sense it.

Imagine Russell Wilson being the player and role mode he is now for ANOTHER TWELVE YEARS.

That's Steve Largent, folks.

Wow. I am embarrassed to say that I did not know this. Damn. I have always thought they retired that number from day 1.

Steve Largent was the original #80 and should have been the only and last. There was a purity to it that was senselessly squashed in a blatant marketing stunt.
This^^^ It's still absolute blasphemy that anyone else wore the number 80, even more so that it was a has-been former Whiner.

For those of you that never got to see Largent play, my sympathies. And I will tell you, it was even more incredible to see him in person. It gave you an even truer understanding of how great he really was.

Just for the record, I had no problem with Rice coming to the Seahawks. He definitely helped the team when our WR corps was getting killed with injuries.

9 names but 5 of them played 3 games between them. Every list is just a little different.

Jim White was claimed off waivers from Houston about the same time Steve Largent was traded so maybe they caught the same flight! He was then cut when rosters reduced from 49 to 45 in week 3. He was picked up by Denver but his NFL story ended there. He passed away in 1981 from cancer that was considered linked to steroid use. He's the earliest death I can find for a former Seahawk player. He was only 33 years old.

Red Bryant is, of course, Jacob's Green's Son-in-law which is quite an amazing coincidence when you think of the sequence of events that had to happen for this to be true. Presumably Bryant wore #79 in tribute to his father-in-law and the brilliant career Jacob had. Bryant taught me the meaning of "setting the edge" and I doubt any player in team history did it better.

But his career still takes a back seat to Papa Green.

When we discuss the "all-time" Seahawks I sometimes fear Green gets lost in the mix but he was a run-stopper and sack-master who played most every down. In 12 seasons he missed exactly one game. One. He was a model of consistency and at times dominant. He is the all-time Seahawk sack leader, a status that doesn't figure to change in my lifetime.

One of the Top-5 All-Time Seahawks in my opinion.
