I honestly don't care what other fans think of the guy, all that matters to me is how he performs on the field. The dudes a willing and sometime gives defenders a glimpse into heaven when he blocks 'em, make electrifying plays, thats all that should matter, not what some simple peasant from down the street thinks.

You are quick to bash Smith's character but excuse Tate's. Because he's on your team.

Except Tate hasn't broken two teammate's noses (and an eye socket.) All of his worst offenses of character have been brought on instantly in the course of celebration: Fail Mary, blowing up Lee and taunting Rams DB's. I'll take that any day over someone who sucker punches other players, let alone teammates. Doesn't seem to run his mouth nearly as much either, but I can only by what I see during the broadcasts.

I think most fans hate him because he went to ND and almost everyone hates ND for whatever reason. For as much success as he had there, to be quite honest, I'm surprised Tate's stayed as low-key as he has up here.

He's a playmaker. I live in Sacramento CA and niner fans around here (including my brother) treat him like Shoe-less Dick Sherman. They respect his ability and at the same time think he is a punk... But they would love it if he was a 9er. :les:

Tate's an extremely unique player. I'm not sure he has any comparables in the league, not even Harvin/Austin. If you try to define him as a prototypical WR, he'll probably frustrate you. He's a player, pure and simple. He makes plays. Get him in stride at least five yards down the field, and something special will happen.

Personally, I love his cockiness. I think it feeds into his game. He should never change.

You know who he compares to? Hines Ward.

Except more speed and athleticism.

Probably the biggest haters are in the 9rs fandom, but, there's no explaining the jealousy of fans around the League, eh?

Just saying the way you see Steve Smith is how others see Tate.

Panthers fans love Smith. They feel the same way about him that you do about Tate. Because he's on their team. You are quick to bash Smith's character but excuse Tate's. Because he's on your team.

It's just funny you can't see it.

Anybody that sees Tate in the same light they see Smith, lacks football education. Next time someone suggests this comparison to you, refer them to Smith's unprovoked attack on his team mate Ken Lucas. After they do that bit of research, ask them how it was that their classy Panther org allowed Smith to remain with the team? There has never been a player in the history of the league so valuable that they should have gotten away with that attack. In todays world, Smith would / should have been charged with a hate crime when he admitted he "got sick of Lucas constantly praising God". So he casually walked over to him (on the sideline), sucker punched him with every thing he had and busted Lucas' face.

IIRC, the high priced and highly prized FA CB Lucas, the former Hawk, was a pro-bowler and Smith put him on IR, causing him to miss several games.

Tate is a fun loving kid and sometimes gets caught up in the moment. He does not compare to the punk-ass that is Steve Smith.

For people saying Smith is a terrible human being, I think they couldn't be more wrong. He has the fiercest competitive attitude in the NFL in my opinion and sometimes it gets the best of him. He's also heavily involved in charity as well. And off the football field, have you ever heard Smiths name in any negative light?

The guy punched 2 teammates in the face! In 2 separate occasions.

The fists of Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith rudely introduced themselves to teammate Ken Lucas's face yesterday, and both guys were kicked out of practice. Lucas, though, had to be treated for injuries on the field before he was taken to the locker room. I'm sure that did wonders for his manhood and self-esteem. Of course, this isn't the first time Smith has hit a teammate after the whistle, so to speak. In 2002, he was suspended for a game after punching Anthony Bright during a film session. The anger-management counseling he received following that incident has clearly worn off. No word yet from the Panthers if their star wideout will receive a suspension this time around.

Look, I love Tate. But let's be honest. He's one of those players you only like when he plays for your team.

I don't know about that... maybe if you're reading one of the '9er troll boards or comment sections after an on-line article... but I'm in SoCal and have a pretty good and large cross section of avid NFL fans of various teams in my office and we're always going at it and I haven't ever heard one guy complain about Tate or refer to him in any negative way, let alone "hate". It's far more of the "wow, what gritty little tough player, dude is awesome" type of stuff.

In fact I hear far more negative about Tate on this board than in "real" life...
I wasn't too fond of him when he was a Domer. I thought he was an immature jerk. I still think he's immature at times, like last week, but he's improved.

Why the hyperbole? That's a very inaccurate comparison.

Steve Smith broke his teammate's jaw. I seriously doubt Tate would come anywhere close to that type of behavior against his brothers in arms. If you want to make a comparison, Hines Ward isn't much of a stretch, but Steve Smith?! This post is clearly all about trying very hard to sound objective, but reaching so far to do so makes it sound really silly. :177692:

As I stated previously, while their games and statures share similarities, there is no comparison between the personas of Tate and Smith. Even as a football player, Tate is more starting to resemble one of the great Golden Domers of all time, Tim Brown. Do notice I said "starting to resemble". Both great after the catch and deadly on punt returns. Let's pray Tate grows up to be Tim brown. That possibility is definitely worth keeping him around, IMO.

Love Golden Tate, but I do not support the nickname "Tater Salad", sorry L80 but that's awful.

You don't need a nickname when your god given name is Golden Tate - in fact, he is my 7yo's favorite player simply because his name is Golden.

And the guy is a football player thru and thru. I hope we somehow find a way to keep him.

Someone beat me to the Steve Smith stuff. It's just crazy how somebody could compare the two when it comes to character and antics.

Deion Sanders was always showboating back in the day.

It's crazy what kind of softie league the NFL has become.

Defensive players get to smash the QB for a sack or the RB for a loss and do a little patented dance, they talk smack all the time. What's the difference between Golden Tate waving bye-bye to folks during the play and JJ Watt standing there doing the Mutumbo finger shake and then doing it all the way to the sideline and mugging for the camera.

Oh, I forgot, it's not taunting if you do it for the camera and not directly at the person. I just find it a little bit dumb that they have to cut the line on rules like that. Let the players have a personality. Let the player be liked or loved for the way they conduct themselves. If they go and hit an opposing player after a play then throw a flag. I'm not a huge fan of giving players a penalty when they get caught up in the moment or even when they have a special dance choreographed for a big moment.

Just my .02

I can't believe anyone is genuinely trying to compare Steve Smith and Golden Tate :34853_doh:

Tate became a punk in the national media and much of the NFL fan consciousness for how he handled the interview after the game-winning catch in the Green Bay game.
He came across as a standoffish psychopathic liar with the "don't know nothin bout that" comment regarding the offensive PI.
If he'd said something different, maybe expressing that, "well, there is a certain amount of pushing and shoving going on during any Hail Mary play" and "sometimes the defense gets away with things, and sometimes the offense does, but it's up to the officials to see it and call" and how he "was just happy to have come down with the ball", or something, anything but the way he actually conducted himself.

Laying out Sean Lee the next week didn't really hurt Tate among real football people; that group realized shows he is a tough little SOB who puts the team first and blocks for his QB.

The Monday night antics with the hand-waving just showed Tate in the same light as the Green Bay post-game MNF interview. "Confirmation bias" as the psychologists call it; those who already thought Tate was a punk will be more convinced he's a punk and a dickwad.
