Week 4-

37.5.

I have seen people saying he did good and he looked very good. That is atrocious. He was the worst defender on the field. Hopefully he gets better.

I’d take any PFF metric with a grain of salt.
Jones did some bad things and did some good things.

Better than his predecessor who never did good things.

From my perspective, he was marginally better than Flowers... too tentative for my blood.

It's time to try Ryan Neal at CB. At least the guy is a playmaker unlike Flowers and Jones (very limited data thus far).

Well one would hope he would only get better seeing as how he's only been practicing with this team for a week or two. That's not to say there's any guarantee he will play better or that we can't find somebody better.

Did you actually watch the game?

PFF grades aren't gospel, by any means. They just aren't. They have their own scale and grades that don't always look at things in a contextually appropriate manner with regard to scheme or other situations.

Anyone who watched the game, especially re-watching parts with special attention paid to Jones, knows he played much better than what we have seen so far outside of that big coverage bust.

I'm sure without the blown coverage TD that grade would be somewhat higher. That seems very fixable.
Give him a couple weeks.

Exactly. Tough crowd. What did people expect, Sherm in his prime level? He just got here, give the dude a chance.

Yeah, even Sherm took a while to get up to speed.

PFF grades are a half-finished spreadsheet that’s been rammed down the fans throats by the people financially invested in it. They should be treated with a similarly appropriate amount of caution.

To pile onto the PFF bashing, the all-22 isn't even out yet which means that their grades are only on the broadcast footage. That is a huge problem for grading any position, but particularly a cornerback who is often not even shown on the screen. Giving him a grade at all when you can only see some of his snaps from a bad angle is pretty hilarious.

Of course that doesn't mean that their all-22 grades are that much better. They gave Mone one of the lowest grades in week 1, only for Carroll to specifically call him out as having a standout performance in the coaching staff's view.

ONly grades that matter are the Coaches Monday grades since they knew each and every player's assignment on each and every play.

But of course, we will never be privy to those grades since we aren't invited to Tell the Truth Monday.

We got off the field on 3rd down several more times than previous games. Jones had to be a factor in that. Has anyone done an analysis of how many times teams targeted Flowers on 3rd down, and got a 1st down reception? I know the nuances of zone/man coverage are a factor, but teams with smart coaching staff would come in with an offensive game plan to exploit Flowers, and create a situation, on key plays, where Flowers has the cover, and then target the receiver he is "covering". You know, the stuff we wish PC would do, find an opponent weakness and exploit it, Belichick-like, rather than the old "impose our will" crap that hasn't worked since prime Marshawn and LOB. You know, like how Brady and the Patriots repeatedly, repeatedly exploited Tharald Simon in SB49.

So if Sidney* Jones changes it from a 90% completion rate (Flowers) to a 50% complete rate targeting his guy, that changes the entire dynamic of the opponent's offense. With the result of getting off the field on 3rd down a lot more.
Jake Heaps' analysis basically describes this scenario in this article: https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1517066/ ... secondary/

"“But you could just tell there was a lot more confidence in the safeties to be more aggressive over the middle of the field because they didn’t necessarily have to worry about the outside with D.J. Reed and Sidney Jones out there. That was exciting to see.”

Key stat: Pass breakups.
"The Seahawks had four pass defenses in the first half and nine (pass break-ups) for the game after having just five in the first three games, and they recorded their first interception of the season"
Source: https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/sea ... in-week-4/

The eye test says that the Hawks secondary was playing tighter overall, with an unprecedented number (for them) of pass break-ups in a single game. The D got off the field on 3rd down far more. Even the busted coverage TD to Deebo could be looked at as a positive thing, from the standpoint of not being a 9-minute, 15-play drive, the kind that wears our D down and keeps our O off the field.

PFF can only be trusted with Oline and Dline grades.

They have no clue who is responsible for what or what the coverage call is.

Jones playing 100% of the snaps is clearly better than Flowers playing 100% of the defensive snaps.

If what we have seen in Jone's first game was the floor, we are on to some good things. If what we have seen is the ceiling, we are quite screwed. I like that he was closer to the WR by the time the ball arrived for catching, but closer is no cigar.

I assume his grade got destroyed by the blown coverage up the sideline on the Deebo TD that shold of been his responsibility not Jamal. without that probably a lot better

He gave up 2 TDs. I'm surprised it's that high.

People who are desperate to be right about the Trey Flowers/Sidney Jones competition will quote PFF when it suits them.

Well, on the 1st TD to Dwelley, Jones had good sticky coverage. Dwelley blocked him out very well as Jones made a decent attempt to defend the ball. Not much else he really could have done on a well-placed ball. Even on the blown-coverage TD Jones appeared to be sticking tight to his receiver. And that's strongly more than we have seen recently from other CBs, imo, so there's hope.

Anyways mal have a great day.

This. They effing hate flowers which is fine. That is their opinion. However, people pick and choose what they want to use and not use for their personal liking. I have no vendetta. I just want to win. I swore some of these same people on here would quote PFF for Ifedi and Tre.

Also Jones is a Husky and a lot of Husky fans on this board.

Its kind of the love affair people had for Shaq. He was super over rated minus 1 solid year.
