This is a concern of mine, if he represents the best option we have at RG, we are in trouble. The guy is a holding machien he single handedly killed at least 3 good looking drives with just stoopid flags. Holding on first downs, personal fouls after the play, just dumb shite. He needs to clean up his game or we need to find some able body soon.

Take a read through kearly's DVR review thread. It will make you feel better. I'm not overly excited about him yet, but I see the potential. He is a beast in run blocking.

If this front office and staff thinks he is the best option, that says a lot. They know about 100 times more about this game than all of us combined.

Hahaha Sarlacc.

Sweezy is a beast in the run game. He is still trying to be better at pass pro, and he will...... :229031_chillpill:

He was bad, I have watched the game 3 times now and he was just awful. However I do have faith he can learn it is only his second year at G ever, I just want the security of knowing we have an able body to play the position as Sweezy learns.

Sweezy is one year removed from being a defensive lineman.

But let's get the pitchforks out because he had a couple of penalties against Green Bay.

People forget that GB was blitzing in every fashion possible when the O-Line was not even trying to defend it since that is far from the norm in pre season.

Sweezy might possibly be the most improved lineman by the end of this year. It's on him and Cable to straighten this out.

Sweezy is the Tom Cable prototype player: Good at run blocking, bad at pass protection, and a league leader in penalties.

He wasn't bad, or awful. This post is. But Sweezy wasn't. He was the recipient of some very ticky-tack reffing. The only thing that was bad was his late hit, but you notice that he was responding to the Packers cheap shotting and delay blitzing in the preseason. If he was so "awul" he would have been taken out for more than one play. Pete took him out, told him to stop it, and no more cheap shots. But at some point you have to stand up for your team and take the 15 yards to send the message back. I was glad he did it. Yeah, I said it and I mean it.

Claiming Sweezy is our biggest weakness is silly.

There are two kinds of holds. There are the ticky-tack variety that veterans avoid by knowing how to sell it, like a catcher who catches the pitch off the plate and "frames" it to fool the umpire into calling a borderline strike. Then there are the "oh shit I just got pwned" variety where an OL was beat badly and holds out of desperation.

There were a ton of holding calls in this game by both teams, and nearly all of them were of that first variety. One or two of those a game, okay. But 10+, that's just being way too anal about it. The officiating in that game sucked ass overall, and I wasn't a fan of how they called holding either. It's important to remember that many penalties in the NFL have elements of subjectivity and are made in real time, Sweezy was the same guy out there against the Packers that he was against the Broncos, etc. Sometimes you get reasonable officiating, sometimes you don't.

Sweezy was solid in pass pro but will be victimized by fringe holding calls. So will McQuistan. The good news is that fringe holds all but vanish in the playoffs.

Seattle must have led the NFL in OL penalties last season, if not they must have been very close. I think that is the downside to Tom Cable, his lines seem to get flagged a ton, and it's not because they are constantly getting destroyed in pass pro (though Giacomini, Sweezy, McQuistan might have an off day here and there, certainly).

Gotta go with Shark on this one. Sure he's had his moments, but overall for a guy in his second year of playing the POSITION, and for the most part succeeding at the NFL level, is phenomenal. His has a very big upside!

I have to respectfully disagree with the OP.

I am a big fan of Sweezy's game: great run blocker, superior athelticism for an interior lineman, carries roughly 300lbs without looking fat, long muscular arms, nasty as all get-out. Everything else will come with reps and experience.

This is a bigtime athlete that you have to reel in and ask to tone down the aggressiveness, which is considerably more desirable than the inverse. If he was a problem he wouldn't be playing, this team does not play guys that can't cut it.

Any doubts about the dudes ability as a run blocker I suggest watching the highlight of Lynch's TD run vs the 49ers last season and what Sweezy does to Patrick Willis on that play.

I'd wager by the end of the year Sweezy will be praised as one of the teams most improved players, and considered a mainstay at right guard for the long haul.

It's good that he's getting the reps, because he's got the athleticism but lacks the experience at the position. Right now, our best bet is for Carpenter to get to 100% and stay healthy for a season, but getting Sweezy the reps now could pay dividends when/if Carpenter gets hurt.

Do you mean McQuistan here? I'm not sure what Sweezy and Carpenter have to do with each other.

Everyone talks about Sweezy's upside, but I think he's already there. If he can beat his penalty problem the way that Giacomini may have, then he's already pro-bowl caliber IMO. He gave up a bad sack in the Falcons game and he just had a game with 3 penalties, but you watch him close, he's playing very well. I do think the penalties will be a problem for him for a while still, but Okung had a lot of penalties last year and nobody complains about that. You always want players to improve even more, but I think all Sweezy really needs to improve on now is learning how to sell his blocks to avoid holding calls and to prevent his high effort from turning into late hits.
