I don't think its the scheme so much as our linebackers are very poor. Which begs the question why we would switch to a 3-4 and put another one out there I suppose.

It's kinda the same personnel-wise, just referring to Darrell Taylor and others at that spot as OLBs rather than ends

4-3 under stuff is commonly referred to as using "3-4 personnel" for that reason

Don’t take me over the coals on this too hard, but I think we will see marked improvement when Alton Robinson and LJ Collier come back off of IR. I know I know, neither one has done much. Collier is basically a bust, etc…
Robinson has flashed in the past. Collier(?) this one is probably more of a wing and a prayer kind of hope.
At the very least, they are two veterans who should help the rotation. Plus aren’t they both in a contract year?
Maybe this wasn’t the thread for this but it got me thinking.

If a team decided to change D schemes that would require several personnel changes and significant adjustments from incumbents, maybe that team would make the change in a year where playoff contention is unlikely. Maybe using that season (not a few games starting that season) as a metric to determine which personnel can successfully make the change would be normal and logical and calculated. Perhaps that team would greatly benefit from larger-than-normal draft picks and increasing Cap space too.

If the determination to change D schemes is advantageous in the League today, which seems to be universally accepted as passing increases, can we accept it might take more than 1 season to acquire the best talent, at all positions, during an Offensive re-set, also considering major injury in game#1...???

This D isn't costing the Seahawks a Superbowl in 22. Pete's, possibly, the best Defensive teacher in the League. Let's see which pupils can pass the entrance exam to the 23 season.

The simple truth is we lack the LBs for the job.

Hurtt gave an algebra test to 1st graders. Are the bodies there to do the task? Yes
Is the ability there to do the task? No.

Thats just poor coaching.

I think the problem is that we lack the linebackers for *any* job, as the ILBs are playing badly and both of them would still be on the field in any previous base defense that's been run

Sherm on his week 5 recap show thinks they need to abandon it. After week 3 I wanted to abandon it. Anyone who watches film wants to abandon it.

-- I'm sorry that some of you "don't have time" for it to improve, I guess you are going to explode or something. And don't be so sensitive when someone tries to teach you something. More understanding leads to less emotion.

-- Am I happy with the defense, of course not, but I didn't expect to be at this point. New coordinator, new coaches, tons of rookies and inexperience on the field. It is easy to say in April that this will take a while to gel, but when you have to watch it not working, it is much harder to think that way. But it doesn't change the fact that change takes time.

-- So how long before all the talk of trading our two firsts to get a QB fades away, and instead we use them to get a Will Anderson type and the best Defensive tackle in the draft. (Also, an inside LB, as I have no idea what Barton is doing half the time).

I just don't think they have the personnel to improve it. I also don't think they have good enough personnel to run anything else either and I blame the person in charge of that.

I'm also not sure I trust them with high draft capitol to get the right players. They're evaluation process has been terrible for years now.

Except the way the offense has been playing, even a below average defense is good enough to make the playoffs. This dumpster fire defense is basically ensuring that won't happen unless they miraculously turn things around.

They should just run the bandit package or some variation as base. Use 1 linebacker maybe an extra d-lineman. Teams run all over them anyways, might as well play to their strength which is the secondary.

I'd agree if they didn't suck at safety, but Josh Jones has played almost Barton-level bad as well

Defense would be poor but not quite as bad if Adams could just stay healthy

Wasnt Sherm moreso talking about returning to a cover-3 as their base coverage? He specifically contrasts two-high/quarters looks against "what they know"

34,43,52,61,70 none of those fronts will matter. This team is bad at the basic parts of playing defense. They can't shed blocks and make tackles.

They don't have the right linemen or linebackers to play this defense.

Personally I'd like to see them put Mafe in as the forth DL and drop kick Barton to the curb. That would shake things up. More of a true 4-3.

So you're subtracting 2 linebackers and adding an on-ball "lineman"

You now have what Seattle already runs in nickel

best defensive teacher in the league? I doubt that. Carroll's really good at bringing up DB's, specifically CBs. He hasn't been so good at identifying pass rushers and D-Line talent over his tenure here. His defenses have also been all over the place since 2018.

34 one gap because it is better long term in terms of salary cap management.

You didn't get good grades in school did you, your reading is off and your math wouldn't pass 3rd grade level.

Where did I say anything about a second LBer ? Did you skip some meds or what ?
