How scoring works: Up to 3 points available each passing play. 3 is exceptional, -3 is braindead. 0 is a neutral. 23 pass attempts, so scoring:

Below 18: F
18 - 22: C
23 - 32: B
33+: A

1st Quarter

1st & 10 SEA 35: 18 yard pass to JSN -- Perfect zone beater, JSN across the middle about 10 yards deep. Probably could have led JSN a bit better for more yards, but not necessarily behind him. +1, scheme

3rd & 5 SF 42: 0 yard pass to Barner -- Man to man. Great coverage, pocket collapsing, Darnold throws up a ball. This is a really bad decision. Easily could have been a pick 6 but Barner boxes out his defender for the 0 yard gain. Just gotta eat the ball and take the sack. None of the receivers got separation. -3, bonehead.

1st & 10 SF 43: 21 yard pass to JSN -- I think he has Cooper Kupp open up the middle, but he has enough pocket time to see JSN get open with no safety help nearby. He floats a ball really nicely to an open space. +3, makeup time

2nd Quarter

2nd & 11 SEA 34: Incomple to Barner -- SF Blitz gets a man through and I can only assume that he's throwing this away. I like living to see another day and I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that this is a throwaway ball and not an errant pass. +1, live another day

3rd & 11 SEA 34: Incomplete to JSN -- Ok, so the pressure is coming and I feel like this is a forced throw to JSN. It's a problem because AJ Barner who is his safety net is WIDE OPEN. I don't want to give too much of a negative because he did have pressure, but a player 25 yards away from you isn't your safety net. -1, forced

1st & 10 SEA 14: 5 yards to KW -- Blitz comes, may be a designed play. I feel so bad for Cooper Kupp watching these. This is a neutral. 0, Sorry Coop.

3rd & 8 SEA 16: -3 Yards to KW -- Designed screen, did not work. Maybe he could have sold it a bit more, I don't know. Pass was good. +1, yuck

2nd & 4 SEA 26: 22 yards to JSN -- Hurry up ish. Both Barner and JSN open at the same spot, delivers a nice ball to JSN. Barner could've made a block for JSN there. I don't think this was overly complicated or good. +1, Good ball, but I hope so.

1st & 10 SEA 48: JSN inc -- JSN is the right target and the concept was good. Just a slight overthrow. This is one of those plays that really separates the best from the average. Right idea, wrong throw. +1

2nd & 10 SEA 48: 9 yard to Kupp -- I think I'd like to see him look at that 1 on 1 coverage with Troy Horton streaking (he stared at it) and let it loose. Instead he truly forces a ball to Kupp who with a hand in his face makes a really good snag. The ball placement is perfect on nearly perfect coverage. I don't think it was the right decision though but... +2, zero room for error.

3rd Quarter

1st & 10 SEA 29: 7 yard to Arroyo -- Why does Darnold hate Cooper Kupp? Kupp was streaking beautifully about 15 yards deep with plenty of space. Arroyo was wide open, but ARroyo was flat footed by that point. Not your worst 1st & 10 result, but where's the sling? That being said, +2, 7 yards on 1st down.

3rd & 3 SEA 36: INC to Kupp -- Oh no, that's why we're not throwing to Kupp? Kupp stumbles when he changes direction even though Darnold starts throwing at the right time. Goes off his hands. Wow, he might suck. +2, not your fault Sam.

3rd & 4 SEA 37: 16 yards to JSN -- Pocket collapses just before the play develops, Sam escapes. Somehow finds JSN hiding behind a defender (AJ was wide open for a first down too and probably the easier throw). Sams decision to throw across his body, moving the opposite direction is truly questionable. The ball hardly gets there. This worked but I hated it. Still, while the line didn't do a bad job, Sam correctly escaped and found JSN somehow here. +2, this could have been a negative

1st & 10 SF 47: 2 yards to KW -- This is one of those plays that is easy to mess up. It's a short horizontal pass to Walker after nothing really opens up deep. He leads Walker and KW just has one guy to beat for a bigger gain. KW doesn't, but this kind of simple play is more than a 1. +2, little things matter.

4th Quarter

2nd & 8 SF 45: 2 yards to JSN, Fumble -- Sam got a pretty bad snap and handled it well. Tossed it quickly to JSN. JSN fucks up. +1, good handles.

1st & 10 SEA 37: -8 to JSN -- This can't seriously be a designed play and truly a bad decision to throw it to JSN and not a good throw to him. This could have gone even worse very easily. -2, almost a -3 but +1 because of trash playcalling

2nd & 18 SEA 29: INC to JSN -- I don't hate the throw to JSN, it's a 50/50 ball really. But this needs to be a back far shoulder towars the sideline. A great throw gets this done, but it wasn't a bad throw. +1, right decision

3rd & 18 SEA 29: 3 yards to JSN -- I feel like JSN is just tired now and he throws an errant ball. +1, fine toss. -3 for JSN

2nd and 2 SF 45: 5 yard scramble -- Where's that cross body throw here to Kupp? I think this is a designed scramble. Nice play, nice execution. +2, Sammy Legs

3rd & 7 SF 25: 6 yards to Kupp -- Kupp has to get the first down here. This was caught and fought for like a 1st quarter drive. Looked designed to Kupp here as Sam makes no read and throws it at the correct time. +2, good timing and ball.

1st & 10 SEA 35: 11 yards to JSN -- One of my favorite Darnold plays. He's throwing into a space with 3 defenders. The underneath follows Barner but Sam looks at Barner long enough. He somehow pulls the inside safety away from JSN before firing it in there. +3, chess moves.

1st & 10 SEA 46: INC to JSN -- Deep zone, JSN targets again. This was not a well thrown ball. A bit saily, the wrong part of the body. -1, a good throw does it.

2nd & 10 SEA 46: 40 yards to JSN -- JSN absolutely torches bro here. Excellent ball too, in stride, over the right shoulder. Elite NFL behaviour. +3, this fuccs.

2nd & 5 SF 9: Game losing sack -- Darnold has eyes only for JSN, but once he's given up on that he's too late to effectively get the ball out to KW. Part of the problem is he slaps the ball. Without the slap, this is an easy completion, maybe even a TD. He could've stepped up in the pocket as well, there was a ton of room in front of him. Should I even bother mentioning that Kupp was open in the middle for almost a guaranteed TD? Unfortunately, -3. This sucks.

--------------

Overall score: 21, B-

This wasn't a good game by Darnold but also was not horrendous by any means. He needs to find a second receiver he can trust.

Great post - eyes felt the same. Played fine for what they asked of him. Seemed like they put training wheels on for some reason, which is bizarre since he was brought in knowing the system. 2(?) total play actions for a guy that crushed it last year running PA roll outs, Kubiak is going to need to stretch the field a bit more and WR2 needs to emerge.

Re. “training wheels” — I’ve seen this phrase in a number of comments about this game. While I think it is accurate, I don’t agree with the majority negative associations and inferences.

This game was essentially the first opportunity the first-team offense has had to play with each other for an extended amount of time this season, and the offensive coaching staff’s first opportunity to guide the full unit. I don’t blame them one bit for trying to start off slowly, see what works and what isn’t as successful, and build from there.

Clearly some things didn’t work and should be scrapped or minimized going forward. I trust this veteran coaching staff will also identify these elements of the game plan and work to ensure the stumbling blocks don’t happen again.

(Also, if a couple of ill-timed drops and fumbles didn’t happen, the Hawks were going to win this game, so I still feel pretty optimistic about the season overall.)

Still think your avy is Derp'y (maybe that's the point) but I agree with your honest assessment of Darnold's outing.

This sucks.

Overall score: 21, B-

This wasn't a good game by Darnold but also was not horrendous by any means. He needs to find a second receiver he can trust.
Is 21 a B or a C?
