This happened to Revis before he got hurt. He literally erased a team's top WR target and QBs wouldn't even throw at him.
Eh, not really. Revis was targeted 85 times in 2011, and allowed 35 catches, 1 TD, and a 53-yard reception. In 2010, he was targeted 57 times, allowed 22 catches, 3 TDs, and a 35-yard reception. 2009, he was targeted 111 times, allowed 41 catches, 2 TDs, and a 53-yard reception.
He's a fantastic corner, don't get me wrong; but there isn't really any such thing as a corner who is never thrown at with any sort of consistency. In fact, going back as far as Pro Football Focus has stats for, (2008) Darrelle Revis does not have a single game where he wasn't targeted at least once. (The only exception being games he was out for.) Sherman's already got him beaten in that category. I don't know if any other sites track this that go back further than 2008, but he was drafted in 2007, so it's only one missing year.
Nnamdi Asomugah has 8 games where he started and was not targeted even once since 2008. However, they all came when he was in Oakland, 2010 or earlier. This is a little misleading because Oakland's defense largely sucked overall when he was there, and it was an easy/obvious choice to just throw anywhere but Nnamdi's direction, whereas Revis played his Jets career with a good overall defense, making it more likely that offenses would try to spread the ball around a bit; but with a Pro Bowl corner on the other side and Sherman being an All Pro, teams pretty much have to try throwing at Sherman at least a bit, because you're not gaining much by throwing to the other side. The fact that Atlanta didn't target him once is very impressive. It would be quite a bit less impressive if we had a crappy defense, but we don't.
