The Patriots defense (23rd, +5.5% DVOA) is not even remotely better than the Rams (4th, -12.4% DVOA).
What about weighted DVOA? Which prioritizes their most recent performances... On tape, eye test, Rams defense fell off significantly towards the latter half of the season, while Patriots defense significantly improved. Rams secondary isn't good... Pats secondary is better. Their interior D-line is better than the Rams' as well.

Bradford and Sundell need to bring their A game, because strong interior pressure can throw Sam off his spot.
I wouldn't say that their D is better than the Rams. Their interior line is good, and their D is good against the run, but I don't think they're that strong at rushing the passer. They had 35 sacks on the year.

This right here is the very important thing.

If there is pressure off the edges, Sam can handle that.

If it's up the middle, though, no QB can handle that.
