15th in yards per game, 19th in points.

Seems like an average defense to this point so far to me. May improve with Reed coming back as well.

Adjectives like "real bad" are usually reserved for teams ranked closer to 30.

Real bad in the sense we are about to waste an MVP effort by a QB. QBs don't have seasons like this regularly and unfortunately we don't have the team to capitalize on it.

We are 4-1 and right in the mix for a playoff spot and division title.

Teams with average defenses and MVP type performers at QB win superbowls all the time.

Lets see how it plays out in the coming month or so. We just beat the NFC champs. Which NFC team do you think we are incapable of beating?

Usually a top 10 defense is good enough to get you there. I don't think ours can get it done atm unless we start playing better. Even the chiefs with all their offensive production still didn't make it out of the AFC a large part because of the patriots defense. They probably won't again this year b/c the patriots have one of the best defenses I've ever seen since the LOB.

Russ is probably the least supported QB making a push for the superbowl this year. Bottom ten O-line with a bottom 10 pass defense, and one of those will cost us either too many games for the seed we are going to need, or be the reason we lose a game in the playoffs. Petes playcalling has also been suspect this year but I have more confidence in him getting his shit together. imo if you take wilson off this team this is a bottom ten NFL team. The saints are a perfect example of a team littered with talent at all phases of the game. Brees goes down and they are still a top 5 NFL team.

This year weve had more lucky breaks than we usually get and are thankfully 4-1. I think we are good enough to beat anyone in the NFC anywhere, I just don't think we are consistent enough to win all types of games every week. Our defense can't keep us in game if we have another shit show like we had againts the saints for our offense contend. every team always has a few games like this every year.

Teams I think that are more talented than us right now if you take the QB out of the equation
1) Saints (by far the most talented in the NFC, without brees this is still a top 5 team in the NFL right now)
2) Cowboys
3) Packers
4) Eagles
5) Rams (imo Goff has been handicapping them)

It seems like you are vaugely trying to say that Seattle hasnt put a talented enough team around Russ. Well when you have a 30 million dollar QB, it does become a project. I for one think they have done a darn good job. The hawks are young, getting better, will be in the mix for a great seed in the playoffs, and are capable of beating anyone in the NFL right now. Seems like that is a pretty good place to be in as an NFL fan.

And I would argue that the Packers and Eagles are not more "talented" than Seattle btw. Not at all.

I think they can become a top 10 D. Sometimes you have to give the other team credit. Against the Rams we blitzed CBs, LBs, played 9 sometimes even 10 a few yds off the LOS and they executed damn good on there TD drives. They will do that to a lot of teams.

Petes defense plays better when they can pressure the QB with 4 DL. Hopefully when Ziggy,Clowney and Reed all get in game shape we will get rolling. After watching the Rams game again I feel better about the DBs.

We held the Rams to exactly their season average.

Which would tend to tell me that we played them average.

Not great, not terrible. Average.

They tried their best and I for one am extremely happy with all our young talent. I was just trying to make the point that wilson probably has the worst team out of all the QBs in the NFC making a legit push at the #1 seed.

for example the Rams game in and game out can survive Goff literally shitting the bed for 3 games and still have a winning record. The Saints lose brees and they are still contenders regardless. Rodger plays average packers are 3-1. If Russ has a bad game like goff has been having to start the season 95% chance we are losing that game this season.

we can agree to disagree but I think the packers and eagles overall have more talent than us in the NFC.

I agree with this.

I don't know that I see top 10 for this defense this year. If they're closer to 10 than middle of the pack, I think we're in the hunt for a ring. If not, it seems an awful lot of pressure to put on our offense to out-duel the Chiefs and Patriots of the world. Thankfully those teams are AFC, but in the NFC we have Falcons, Saints (when Brees returns) and Packers to contend with. Maybe Eagles too? I feel okay about our D doing just enough against those offenses, but obviously just conjecture until we actually see it.

We've shown we can eek out a win vs the Rams, so my hope is that this holds true later when we need it running up to the post-season.

Oddly enough, many of the top contenders in the NFC are statistically worse than us on defense.

The Rams and Eagles have allowed more point per game than we have, and the Saints are only half a point better.

That is an extremely relevant dimension to add to the conversation. Along those lines, do we really have any teams with lights-out defenses paired with good offenses? Patriots? Can't think of anyone else.

Of course. There are all kinds of good teams with all kinds of combinations of good parts and bad parts.

What's the point?

Not talking about good parts and bad parts. Your point was that the teams I named as top NFC offenses had defenses that were about the same as ours. This means our middling defense isn't a barrier to climbing the ladder in those circumstances. However, a team with high functioning defense AND offense would be one to be wary of, and I don't see that outside the Patriots.

So, the response to my question would have been to point out such teams, since I couldn't think of any.

Not sure why you missed that.

I'm grumpy, so I was reading sarcasm where maybe none was intended.

Cowboys and saints are probably the closest in the NFC right now. maybe even the 49ers.
