In this hypothetical, what happens after we have Winfield signed and WT3 returns? We'd probably hit 54 players on the squad. Cut Shead? That would feel weird. I don't like feeling weird.

Shead wouldn't be on the active roster. We'd have to cut Lockett or someone else.

253hawk. Is this something new or did he just not update his twitter feed? Bait and Switch has been frowned upon in the past, mostly during Free Agency period but was known to get the poster a time-out depending on how things spiraled out of control. Times have changed but just thought I would take the opportunity to point that out for you.

As usual, when I think "no way", it turns out opposite:

WINFIELD BACK TO SEATTLE?

In the wake of cornerback Walter Thurmond's suspension for a violation of the league's substance-abuse policy, as the NFL Network first reported on Sunday morning, the Seattle Seahawks surely realize they're going to need cornerback help. They'll face the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers in the next two weeks without Thurmond and the injured Brandon Browner.

Do not be surprised if Antoine Winfield winds up being that help.

The Seahawks have contacted the three-time Pro Bowl selection, a source told FOX Sports. And while Winfield announced his retirement at the end of training camp with Seattle, it wasn't truly a retirement. The 36-year-old Winfield has continued to work out and has heard from several teams recently but has turned down all offers. He's looking for a chance to play in his first Super Bowl and the Seahawks could give him that opportunity.

If it's true they have contacted, he's not going to get a better offer for a chance to go to the SuperBowl.

I'd be happy with having him play behind Maxwell and Lane for a game or two until he gets back up to game speed. He was getting burned in preseason, but he's a proven guy who should be able to hold the slot.

But he's a vet. He knows what he's doing and he went through training camp with us. We won't find a better option off the street.

Having too many good CB's is a good problem to have. There is no guarantee Browner comes back in time for playoffs. Groins are one of those injuries that can linger a long time. If Winfield comes in a plays well they may be forced to put BB on IR.

If he's willing, sign him up ! What happens if Lane or Maxwell get hurt or repeatedly burned ? Or if something happens to Sherm ? Not sure why ppl would want to say "no" to some added depth and leadership, even considering he's most likely lost a step

I don't know I find it hard to believe that even if Winfield wants to come back here after being cut that a 36-yr old CB who hasn't played in a year is going to have much of a positive impact.

I hope I am wrong on this but I'm not too optimistic on this option.

To say he hasn't played in a year is a bit of an exaggeration.

Yes it's been close to a year for regular season games, but he went through a full NFL training camp and was playing in pre-season games just a couple months ago against starters. It's not like he hasn't been on a football field since last season.

You might as well have said the same thing when Mike Rob came back, then. And he didn't even have most of training camp and preseason because of his illness!

These guys are vets and pros. They know what they are doing and they can jump back into it, especially after only being out of the game for a couple months when you have done it for 10+ years.

Much like my position on Mike Rob earlier this year, I'll be excited if they bring him back and won't lose any sleep if they don't. if they bring him back, that means he's in game shape and able to contribute at a high level; and if they leave him out on the street, it means he isn't. We win either way.

For all that I very much trust in the depth this team has (and get excited of the prospect of what the 'next man up' will do), I kinda hope Winfield can go. He's a phenomenal nickel corner when he's playing well and would totally ease the burden of having BB & T3 out.

They need someone. Winfield makes the most sense due to familiarity.

Oh and whoever said Nmandi Asomugha must have missed the last two seasons he's played. We'd be better off bringing back Trufant or Springs.

Signing Winfield back to us for the remainder of the season would be the best-case scenario, imo.

He's proven, apparently has been staying in shape, and he knows the system.

Plus, don't you think all he would want at this point is a shot at a Superb Owl run?

SIGN HIM UP!

Long time lurker, blah blah blah…

I like Winfield - the guy’s a proven commodity. Yeah, he might have a few miles on him, but he also doesn’t have the wear ’n’ tear of 12 weeks of regular season. Plus, the guy already retired, so you know he’s 100% full-go on a SB contender. There’s no reason for him to leave anything in the tank.

On the other hand, B-Max has looked very capable in the (very) little I’ve seen from him. And the FO has done one helluva job so far, so you kinda gotta trust them. I mean, Walt is CB1 or 2 on alotta teams in this league.

Go ‘Hawks!

Welcome! I agree with you that Winfield is going to be fresher and less beat up than most of the league at this point of the season. It might actually offset the loss of a step from age.

The thing I've not seen anyone post yet is this: Maxwell and Lane have been playing very well (Lane more last year, but he's a terror on ST). Thing is, they're not slot guys. They are bigger, physical and fast CBs but they're not quick. This is why Thurmond slid inside in the nickle; he's quick. He's also our smallest CB. Slot WRs tend to be quicker, shiftier guys that are usually smaller than the guys on the outside. It's not all a coincidence.

Winfield is better in the slot. He's also one of the best in the league at playing "downhill" or attacking the LOS. I think he'd be a better matchup with Sproles in the game when he's in the slot. A lot of this is recognition: if you can diagnose the play quicker than another guy, you're going to be in position faster. Winfield is a crafty vet and he's seen pretty much everything.

I think it's a good move. What happens when Thurmond comes back ? How about we make him inactive until we get another injury? A lot of folks here are saying "cut his ass". Thing is, you're really not punishing him much. He'll get snapped up extremely quickly and end up getting paid on another team anyways. So now we lose a player we want, and someone else gains for nothing. Sit his ass on the bench and let him watch someone else finish what he started.
