Former teammate of Eric Winston in Houston, lots of zone blocking experience, and can play all 3 interior positions. Good veteran insurance policy for camp, but not a realistic threat for the 53 barring injuries to others.

His experience at LG has me keeping an eye on Carpenter, who is not practicing today again. Maybe just a coincidence or an attempt to spread out the reps until Carpenter is back to practicing full-time?

Word coming out is that they're planning to play him at Tackle.

BTW, the Hawks also released LB Brandon Denmark and WR Ronald Johnson, and re-signed DT Andru Pulu.

Made his first Pro Bowl at age 32 last season? Interesting...

Not last season, in 2012. Smith struggled last season and dealt with knee issues.

If he starts anywhere this season we really are in trouble.

Everywhere I see, it was last year... but alright.

If he starts anywhere this season we really are in trouble.

If it stands true that he was a pro bowler last year, or for that matter in 2012, why would we be in trouble?

If he's starting it would because of the following:

He has beaten out a current starter by method of competition. (Okung/Carpenter/Unger/Sweezy/Winston)

Or a starter becomes injured.

Keep in mind that the same obstacles Winston faced could have effected Smith in 2013 . . . changing schemes away from the ZBS they'd previously excelled in, and a total collapse of the franchise.

Actually the Texans had the same ZBS last season under Kubiak that they always had. Winston's issues outside of the ZBS were with the Cardinals last season in Bruce Arians' power scheme.

And to clear up any confusion re: Smith's Pro Bowl appearance.....it was the "2013 Pro Bowl" because they refer to it via the calendar year in which game itself is physically played (i.e. on January 27, 2013). But it was for the 2012 NFL season.

I remember a day when this type of stuff was just roster churn and not an indictment of a positional group.

Comments like these are so short-sighted and naive. Unless you've watched every Texans football game the last 3-4 years specifically Wade Smith, you have no clue what he can bring to the table.

Your right I don't know what he will bring to the table right now neither do you but if he does start what does that tell you about the other players and our depth. He's a older lineman we got off the scrap heap so forgive me if I'm not convinced he's a solution to our O-Line woes.

Yeah, and then what is the point of you saying what you did. Aged ZBS linemen are probably the hardest to find new jobs, not many teams run the system and the ones that do in this day will opt to go younger and cheaper.

Doesn't mean he doesn't have nothing left or nothing to add. Not saying he's going to be stellar but for god sakes chap! what is the use of making assumptions before figuring all that stuff out and letting him compete in our system?

1. He might not make the team.
2. If he does its probably for a good reason as others have stated above..

Didn't we also get Beast Mode off the scrap heap? :stirthepot:

He wasnt saying anything about how great he was. Were you just saying that to ruffle feathers? Why be pessimistic? It's not like PC and JS have a bad track record with bringing guys in! Sheesh
