“I thought it might be the best tackling performance I’ve ever witnessed in watching an NFL game. If all you do is tackle well, you’re going to have a top-flight defense. If you just tackle well, you know it’s going to be hard to score and you’re not going to give a bunch of extra yardage up, so you’re not going to have a bunch of explosive plays on you. If that’s all you do is tackle well, you’re going to be pretty stellar. … I don’t remember seeing a better tackling game by a defense than what I witnessed on Sunday. I thought they were amazing.”

- Former NFL player and current NFL analyst Mark Schlereth on the Seahawks defense last Sunday.

More evidence that Mac walked into a pretty good situation. Sure, we upgraded players in the off season, but many of these guys are the same guys that were giving up yards like handing out sandwiches at a homeless shelter. Many of us have felt for several years that our D was underperforming, that the talent we had should have produced better results.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and Sunday was a feast for our newly revamped defense.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if Denver loses every game they play this year, but after watching them Sunday I think they will win their fair share by the time the smoke clears. They are a better team than I expected they would be. Same for our Seahawks. I expected a slow start on both sides of the ball. Instead our D came out with their pants on fire and they never let anyone put it out.

We added all new safeties and LBs. Those previous guys were some of the biggest issues in the run game and passing game. Also Pete’s system was old and stale, he should have evolved with the years.

I agree. Rayshawn Jenkins=upgrade, Tyrel Dodson=upgrade, Jerome Baker=upgrade, K'Von Wallace=upgrade. Those guys were flying around on Sunday. (The one holdover, Julian Love was pretty good, too.)

I think Pete, in his old age and somewhat arrogance, forgot to emphasize the fundamentals, simple things like sure tackling. He had the personnel, but he didn't get the most out of them.

I think 10 years ago Pete would have gotten a lot more from the team. Everyone ages and changes, but I think he trusted his players to do things toomuch without reinforcing the simple things enough.

There was a point where Pete and the defensive staff were making tackling instructional videos that were used not just in the league but down to the high school level. In my opinion that was the real hallmark of the LOB, you might catch a pass against them but you were being put on the ground at the spot of the catch.

I'm not sure when or how that message got lost but it was quite frustrating to watch the past few years.

One thing that always annoyed me with Pete's defenses is how much ground players would allow when approaching a ball carrier head on. Think of a db playing 7 yards off the receiver at the snap and they throw a smoke route, Pete coached players slowly move towards the player worried about missing a tackle while giving up an easy 5 yards.

I saw the complete opposite on Sunday. This defense is going to be good for my blood pressure.

Makes me wonder what went on post LOB years with the coaching. Pete's defense at its core was very simple and straight forward. We didn't do much in the way of blitzing, we didn't disguise what we were doing. Everyone knew that the Seahawks were coming out in Cover-3. Basic football, but it was effective because our players were disciplined. Everyone knew their assignment and stuck with it.

Tackling was always one of the big things that Carroll emphasized during the LOB years. Teams were scrambling to copy his approach to tackling, people were bringing in Rugby players like Carroll did to teach that style of tackling.

After 2017 things were a mess on multiple different fronts. RB's seemed to be able to just walk themselves out of our tackles, no problem. Defenders weren't keeping their assignments. It's as if the team had shifted from everything that made them successful.

I think Pete just overrestimated hiw much of the success they had during the LOB years was due directly to his style of coaching. I think he took it for granted that he could just 'do it like he did it before' and everything would be fine.

He never assigned enough credit to the fact that he assembled a pretty sharp class with the LOB.

His philosophy of keeping it simple and playing with your hair on fire was right for the time and worked with an intelligent group of players who could morph his scheme into something transcendent because of how deeply they owned it, how completely they learned it, and how well, as a group, they executed it.

But when they left, the chemistry was gone. And he never assembled a similar group of intelligent players with the unique bond the first one had. None of the post LOB iterations of players / coaches had the same standard of excellence or maintained accountability the way the OG group did. They played the 'hair on fire' bit, but were rinning in the wrong direction and only ended up burning the house down.

He tried to adapt the scheme, but never adapted his approach.

This was a weird game (not uncommon for Week 1) that could very easily have ended more like 9-38 had just a handful of things that went kind of wonky not happened.
