League clears Saints in Todd Davis situation

If the NFL was indeed investigating the Saints’ handling of the release of linebacker Todd Davis, the investigation was wrapped up a lot more quickly than Robert Mueller’s ongoing probe into the Ray Rice debacle.
On the very same day that news of the investigation first emerged, the NFL has issued a statement clearing the Saints of any wrongdoing: “The Saints have been in compliance with league rules with regard to this situation.”
The fact that the Saints quickly were exonerated doesn’t explain why it was even a story that the NFL was exploring possible wrongdoing by the Saints. Per a league source, the Broncos didn’t complain about the fact that Davis remained in the Saints’ facility after the Saints released him. According to the source, Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis gave Davis an endorsement to Broncos G.M. John Elway, after Davis was cut.
So it appears that someone with the league office leaked what ultimately was (and may have always been) a non-story. Which would be a convenient diversion for the NFL at a time when both the Adrian Peterson situation and the Ray Rice appeal are coming to a head.
