Russ doesn't want trash in front of his offense, he probably had no idea whose shoe it even was, so it makes sense to throw it behind the line of scrimmage. he's not gonna toss it to either sideline, it may not even make it there and he may have no idea who's side it even goes to. Most of the players are wearing white or black shoes on both teams, he's supposed to watch the play clock and also find the owner of a shoe? gimme a break.

Its funny that theyre so mad about it because he still had plenty of time to get off the field. He basically walked to the sideline while the offense was lining up, and the guy they sent on to replace him was just standing there talking to a coach.
