They need to sign someone or someone has to step up big because Harvin is still injured and I know he won't be playin this week.

There is a lot to consider when you lose a Flanker type receiver who is 6'4". One aspect that has me hopeful is how players have developed in this system and when given time normally shine unless it's O-Line. Sidney brought a height dimension to our offense that we don't have anywhere else. On the flip side of that though has Rice's height really been used in an advantage type situation? I don't recall any fade TD routes or Sidney leaping over a CB this season to make an outstanding grab.

Rice definitely drew some coverage with his presence no doubt. However cannot Kearse provide some legit threats as well? I remember a TD leaping grab in Indy that was damn impressive as well in Carolina. While Rice drew attention Kearse really has shown he can make plays and is worthy of coverage as well. Rice's production can be matched by Kearse no doubt in my opinion. The on dimension I will miss is the 6'4" height. However as I said earlier I didn't notice the height being that big of a factor this season. Might of been a catch or two somewhere but not a huge impact.

It's true. He goes down hard for some reason.

This is a big loss. No matter what those dismissing this as an unfortunate way to see the inevitable happen, this was a big loss. Rice on the field automatically took the defense's best player out of play for the other receivers and opened them up to making plays. Tate, Baldwin, Kearse, the tight ends, all saw more production as a result of Rice being on the field of play. And Rice, if you'll remember, came up with some key plays that won games for us. Quite a few. They may not have been touchdowns all, but many were drive-sustaining catches on third down.

Hopefully we will see a smooth transition from Rice to Harvin, starting next week. Hopefully Harvin will provide a little more separation that Rice could not, and will start racking up the catches, yards, and touchdowns.

Count me as one who quietly considered Rice a definite salary cap casualty next year. If pressed, I'd have said early on he wouldn't be on the team next year. Now, it's hard to see otherwise, and it's a damned shame it had to happen the way it did. We may not have seen his production on the field translate to his own stats, but we now have a key hole to fill in an offense that needs no further holes.

Well said Sailor.

HIS production maybe, but not his presence, which contributes directly tot he production of our running game and other receivers.

I'm not the biggest rice fan in the world but that doesn't change the fact that he was our #1 receiver for GOOD reason.

the people minimizing this have a gross misunderstanding of how football works I guess.

I seriously doubt that Rice being out = Tate, Baldwin, Kearse, and Harvin being unable to get open. Seriously, it takes a playmaker with good hands from our offense but saying our other receivers won't get open now is just silly.

Size does not matter if the schemes are there. The Rams use to destroy the league with 6' wide receivers. Tate plays big, Baldwin makes some sick freaking clutch plays, and Harvin was an MVP candidate last year. I've seen enough of Kearse to believe he can play the deep role in this offense.

I like that SR was sucking it up and doing his best, but his very best was probably 3 years ago now. This might help us more than hurt in the big scheme of things.

Im not concerned at all. Rice obviously wasnt playing 100% or like he has in the past. He honestly is just an average WR. In Minnesota outside of the 1 year with Brett Favre he hasnt done that great. Harvin just replacing rice in the offense is an Upgrade

Can't wait for this week to be over. Team played like crap and big injury news.

Glad we won or else I'd be really depressed.

Hope the team looks like a good team again on Sunday.

Rice never did master the art of falling. I thought Stephen Williams demonstrated a useful follow thru roll after his leaps. But Williams is worse at keeping his feet and crashing to the ground. He crashes far too frequently to stay healthy and build a meaningful NFL career. With all emphasis on treating concussions on top of leg injuries, it is possible that teams are beginning to reevaluate the risk/rewards of long tall leaping receivers.

That's why I emphasized Kearse had been making productive plays this season when targeted. If he can continue to be productive he will draw coverage like Rice did. Kearse is very capable and will have more opportune moments to show that. Now as far as run blocking I am not sure where Kearse is on that. Not saying Rice will be missed. Just saying we can still run out offense and be effective.

Kearse is a great story and a decent depth guy but he has a loooooong way to go before anyone would considering putting their #1 CB on him over our other receivers.

Yeah, I don't want to downplay Rice's contributions, but I'm more concerned about the shaky depth at WR we now have more than if Kearse can give us even 75% of what Rice does (or, if you look at Tate as our true downfield threat, which he really can be I think, if Kearse can give us 75% of what Tate does on the outside).

Rice may not have been operating at 100% but over the past year and a half, he has made clutch catches that bailed out the team. Those sideline catches against the Skins and 9ers last year were top notch. Same as the catch against the Cards last week. Miami last year. Just a lot of great catches.

His health and contract is what got folks on his case. Brutal game.

Thank you for summarizing it

I love the catches he made and realized his importance. I also didn't think that his contract would be affordable next year as a part of the whole. Doesn't mean I didn't love what he brought to the team or that I didn't appreciate him.

I don't expect him back but wish him well and hope he will have get a ring as part of the team
