I just wanted to lay out what the other teams in the NFC West are doing at the beginning of the new league year. Basically, two teams are in an arms race with the Seahawks and one team decided to surrender. I think the Rams’ defense definitely got better, but at a very steep price. The 49ers worked on improving their receivers room and they probably feel that elsewhere they’ll be better just by virtue of getting some players back healthy. The Cardinals officially declared they’re on the march for Arch.

LOS ANGELES RAMS
The Rams went all-in on improving their secondary, believing that they needed better players to stop Darnold, JSN and Rashid Shaheed. They spent a total of $211 million on Trent McDuffie ($124 million/4 years), Jaylen Watson ($51 million/3 years) and Kamren Curl ($36 million/3 years).

It’s a lot of money, but I would say the Rams accomplished their mission of improving their secondary. At least they signed Kam Curl for a little less than the Bears paid Coby Bryant. It’s not just money–in addition to what they paid him, they also gave KC a first, a third, a fifth and a sixth for McDuffie. But in a year where the draft is deep with cornerback talent, was it smart to use so much of your resources in salary cap and draft picks for that position?

They did nothing to improve their offensive personnel. And next year, Matt Stafford will be 38 years old, and Davante Adams will be a year older. Last year, Adams didn’t come close to the production he had with the Packers and the Raiders, and it will be worse this year. Rumors are they tried to trade for AJ Brown (and may still be trying to do so).

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
The 49ers were trying to find weapons for Brock Purdy. Their big move last week was signing 33-year-old Mike Evans for 3-years at $42 million. Then they signed Christian Kirk for a deal worth up to $6 million. Time will tell if that will pan out for them. Losing Juaun Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk, they needed to get younger and faster at that position, not get a veteran at the end of his career and a journeyman. I heard someone on the NFL Network say that Evans will be like what Julio Jones was for Shanahan in Atlanta. I really doubt that’s going to be the case. Jones was 27 and at the height of his career during the Falcons’ Super Bowl year.

Their best move was probably trading a third round pick for Osa Odighizuwa, the Cowboy’s defensive tackle, but he won’t be cheap at $20 million per year. They also brought back every Seahawk fan’s favorite, Dre Greenlaw on a one-year $7.5 million deal.

Other than that, the 49ers did some bargain shopping, picking up Vederian Lowe, a backup tackle from the Patriots for $12 million/2 years and Nate Hobbs, an oft-injured and mediocre Packers cornerback for $4.5 million. The biggest move of the off-season so far for the 49ers is losing Robert Saleh, and replacing him with Raheem Morris, former Falcons’ HC and former Rams’ DC. I think they’ll miss Saleh.

ARIZONA CARDINALS
I like what Mina Kimes said about the Cardinals, that they were “quietly quitting.” They didn’t spend much money or go after any stars. They didn’t seem to have much of a plan. The biggest signing was Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo, for $31.5 million over 3 years. He wasn’t even one of the better guards available, and he’s 33 years old. Tyler Allgeier, who a lot of people here wanted for the Seahawks, was signed for $12.25 million/2 years. They also signed Kendrick Bourne, 31-year-old journeyman wide receiver for $10 million/2 years. The Cards also signed Roy Lopez for $11.5 million/2 years. The funniest thing that the Cardinals did was try to get Jimmy Garrapolo, and when that failed, pivot to Gardner Minshew (one-year deal worth at least $5.75 million). So in a division that has Stafford, Purdy and Darnold, they decided to go to battle with Minshew and Jacoby Brisset. If that was their plan, they should have just kept Kyler Murray instead of paying him to play for the Vikings.

What the Lambs have done won't move the needle one iota on their dismal Special Teams.

What the 40-Whiners have done is concerning but should help them. But adding aging WRs comes with inherent risk wrt injuries and potentially not establishing timing and rapport with a different QB.

Pre-draft, the Seahawks continue to be the most complete team in the NFCW.

Just responding to SF part. :D

I don't really disagree with you. I think the biggest addition is actually going to be Osa Odighizuwa. They've needed a rusher on the interior to pair with Alfred Collins who is much more of a run stuffer.

I think they'll miss Salah too, but not as much as you think. Its not that Morris is as good as Saleh. Its that Morris will likely have ALOT more to work with this year than Saleh did.

RE: Evans, Kirk, Greenlaw....

....no, Evans WILL NOT be Julio. Thats just hyperbolic....but IMO all these guys are on effectively 1 year deals (Evan is more 1 year and then we'll see). They are fairly inexpensive as well.

The main thing the Niners have to do is get younger. You can't really do that in Free Agency unless you pay a huge premium and even then its kinda Fools Gold. They had HUGE holes last year on the D-Line and WR. I see this much more as they are filling all of those holes with a player that can get them through the year and then turn those positions over to younger guys already on the team or players they have yet to draft.

All Free Agents are available for a reason....the case for a number of these guys is age.

BTW...I don't think they are done. I think they will go get Joey Bosa to be a situational pass rusher and play with his brother.

Then, in the draft, they'll go get a pass rusher, WR, O-Line, etc. Odighizuwa I think is the only guy they've signed with an eye for the long term, and he's the only guy they gave up a pick for. That's not a coincidence.

LA going all in, and will fall short yet again. A lot of contracts expiring at the end of season, they're f#$%ed and it's awesome.

I agree, getting Osa Odighizuwa for a third rounder was big. A result of the Cowboys being stupid. I don't hate the moves getting Evans and Kirk, but it's still a far cry from the 2023 WR room with Samuels, Jennings and Aiyuk. Mainly, the 49ers will be better from getting Warner, Kittle, Bosa, et al. back from injuries.

It's going to be a wild 2026 season in the NFC West. On the Mina Kimes podcast this week, Kevin Clark was questioning whether the Seahawks were the third best team in the division now with the additions made by the Rams and 49ers.

I would really like them to draft a 1sr or second round WR. Evans deal is basically a one year deal

Lol. The rams didn't do that because they were afraid of Mr. 21 yards.
Rashid Shaheed literally made our offense worse last season. It got worse when he arrived, and it was worse when he was on the field. He *actually* made our offense worse.

It was to stop JSN. Despite having the best WR in the NFL, our WR group heading into 2026 is shockingly mediocre.

Stop JSN = stop our offense, especially when our rushing attack is expected to be at least a little worse.

No one is afraid of Mr 21 yards.

Perhaps you missed the 51-yard pass to Shaheed in the opening drive of the NFC championship game?

Shaheed burned the Rams in more ways than one this year. And you still won't acknowledge that?

Worst takes on dot net. You’d think Shaheed’s contract was coming out of his bank account. Completely obsessed with him.

Our running game took off after Shaheed was fully installed into the offense. I wonder why that was?

49ers moves are solid as well as the Rams but the Cardinals? I was on the Cardinals bandwagon with their team building but what they are doing now is rudderless.

Disagree a bit on WRs in '23 being better.

Aiyuk of '23, certainly, but not really the others.

Deebo got exposed in the SB. He can't and never really has been able beat Man coverage consistently. He's never been a great route runner. KC came out in Zone and Spags immediately saw that Purdy was ripping them apart. He switched almost exclusively to Man with Snead and McDuffie and Deebo had a CB in his back pocket the rest of the game. Jennings played well, but even he couldn't get any separation.

Over the last several years, no teams WRs have had less separation than SFs.

That was why they let Deebo go, why they drafted Pearsall, and why they aren't offering Jennings a big contract.

Evans/Pearsall/Kirk are the anti-Deebo...and I mean that both good and bad. They won't be RAC guys like Deebo was, so that element is lost. They ARE all good route runners, which is the direction they are trying to go in. Kirk will likely play exclusively in the slot.

Me too...but I think all of their FA moves basically give them ability to take best player available in the first 2 rounds.
