It feels like people haven’t gone and read the original PFF article, and the X poster is misreporting what was published. It’s available for free.

It’s not a traditional 1 through 32 ranking. They placed each quarterback into a specific category, ranked the quarterbacks within those categories, then ranked the categories based on potential for the entire group.

Smith was ranked near the bottom of the “Solid starters who have flashed high-end play” category. Darnold was at the top of the “Veterans capable of solid play, but could be quickly replaced” category.

If they had been placed in the same category, they unquestionably would’ve been ranked much closer.

In their category tiers, they put “Young players with a wide range of potential outcomes” between those two categories. So, you get weird rankings like Ward, Williams, and Penix being ranked above Darnold. I really can’t argue against ranking young guys, as a group, above easily replaceable vets. The potential is there with the young guys, once again as a category.

I would argue that it’s not entirely unreasonable to place these two players in these two different categories based on their respective bodies of work.

I thought it was a fair ranking. My guess is Darnold will soon be moving up a couple tiers

Remember that these are the same experts who ranked Geno at 33rd out of 32 stating QB’s his first year as a starter. Look how that worked out.

Tell us you didn't watch the Vikings' last two games without explicitly saying you didn't watch the Vikings' last two games.

Darnold very clearly reverted to his well-established level of suckitude for those two games.
did you see Patrick Mahomes' last game? yikes

At least PFF ranked Darnold ahead of Russell Wilson, lol.

The write-up on Darnold was fair. I think you have to look at his entire career, not just 17 games in ranking him. It's not like his first few years in the league never happened.

Still, I think it would have been more fair to put Darnold into Tier 3a or 3b. Somewhere between 15 and 20 would have made more sense. Yes, it was only one season, but it was 18 games.

I actually believe Geno ‘could’ be a top 10 QB but, he certainly didn’t deserve that after last year.

Darnold…we’ll see. He’s another journeyman QB that happened to be surrounded by a very good team..with lots of weapons.

I’ll just put it like this…I’m expecting to see Milroe far earlier than most.

Smith in the Vikings last year woukd have been better than he was in Seattle and likely better than Darnold was in that system because metrics like on target throws, adjusted completion percentage and accuracy under pressure go a but deeper at refkecting the true ability of a qb than TDs do.
That Minny OL was very mediocre after Darrisaw went down for the season on Week 7.

Darnold made that line look better than it had any reason to be.

Tell us you want Darnold to fail here without telling us you want Darnold to fail here.

Geno is gone, bud.

But why, though?

Why can't the focus be on what he's done recently?

I mean QBs develop at their own pace.

Maybe Darnold is finally coming into his own after being under the tutelage of Shannahan and then Kevin 'O Connell?

In my opinion, continuing to harp on what USED TO BE 5 years ago has no bearing on what could and would be now in 2025.

And I'll just put it like this....

If Milroe sees the field as a QB during the regular season, it will be either because :

1.) It's a blowout Seahawks win and MM decided to toss him out there to get his feet wet

or

2.) Sam Darnold got hurt but Drew Lock is ineffective in relief.

Otherwise, aside from the "Milroe Package" being talked about, I don't see him being the QB this season (or even next season depending on how Darnold does).

As of right now, my ranking.

#14 Darnold
#17 Geno
#34 Lock/Milroe (tie)

With the pre/reg season things will fluctuate. This could be one of our most interesting preseasons ever.

I like how you've become the designated Darnold defender. Someone has to do the job.

We all want Darnold to succeed, but he's only been a Seahawk for a minute, so understandably, most of us have some skepticism.

You should also temper your enthusiasm for Darnold with some reality. For example, Sam had more time to throw than just about every other QB in the league last year, 2.90 seconds. It was the third highest, compared to Geno (38th) and Mahomes (37th).

If you go look at the 2024 rabks that pff did about the same time, Geno was ranked pretty low.. With a lot better options than he has now. Its funny how he shot up the board bow that he's not a Hawk qb lol. And of course, now that Sam is our qb he is ranked super low. They got to make money with their advertisements somehow, gotta kick up the "legacy" teams! This really seems like a Cowherd type, shock jock ranking in my opinion

Mahomes's one bad game wasn't at the end of his only good season in a seven-year career. Darnold's last two games were a return to the utterly $#!+ty level of play he had clearly established over the first six years of his career.
what? never heard of this Mahomes guy
