How does everyone feel about the pass rush at this time? I still feel that we need to improve up the middle in order to beat the better playoff teams. Too many times we rely on a 4 man rush and there's a conversion on 3rd down from the opposing team. I think there are times when we should blitz and don't. Mebane and Rubin are good against the run, but lack that push you need inside to prevent the quarterback from stepping up into the pocket and completing the pass. Personally I think Bennett and Wagner, along with Irvin and Clark are our best pass rushers at this time. Maybe Marsh, HIll, and Francis will give a boost as we approach the end of the season. I hope coach Richard realizes this, because the pass rush is critical for advancing in the playoffs; especially for those teams that can muster one during the 4th quarter. We're so close I can taste it. Pete will find another running back to fit the mold. And the O-line is playing lights out right now, giving Russ the time he needs to see down the field. If the Hawks keep that #5 spot and happen to play the Giants in the playoffs we will be going since we live in CT. Hope my dream comes true to see them play live. Until then give me your thoughts on the pass rush.

Im mixed.. I honestly see a lot of holds from opposing olines to say we suck or need help. Because the few times we arent held we usually get there or get pressure. And those few times arent enough for me to say we dont need help etc etc

I could be wrong but it seems much more potent with Hill on there, nothing against Mebane, but I think Hill's been more effective this year. JMO.

Don't forget Cliff Avril.

Good tip. Someone should write Richard an email to make sure he gets the message.

You're right I did forget him in my haste to write. Avril is a stellar talent who gives all anyone can handle.

Boys we have the Offense to match with Carolina or Arizona. Coach Richards can't leave this team short by playing conservative and not implementing a strategic blitz now and then when needed. And I hope he has burned the book on those 3 man rushes on third and long. It doesn't work. I just close my eyes when he does this.
What needs to be realized is that there aren't many teams that have made it to 3 Super Bowls in a row. And we all know what happened in the last 26 seconds last year. We can get there again, damn it. It's well within reach. It's time to start playing for keeps, and take back what was rightfully ours in the first place. Coach Richards, don't pussy foot around on this one. Use the talent you have to the maximum, in the places that garner the most success and bring that ring home.

I think you're right about pressure up the middle. But like someone else said in a different thread I get a little excited about the speed when I see Avril, Bennett, Clark & Irvin lined up together.

Hell seems to have a better push than Mebane but we could show some improvement. Richards doesn't seem to like to bring heat up the middle when he is blitzing

Pretty much this. I'd say we would lead the league in holding penalties (against) if the refs only called half of the obvious ones.

That said ,we need a stud interior rusher. That just might be Clark. After the next two games, we'll know for sure as he's going to get a lot of reps in 2 more blowout wins.

In the last month or so we've been playing fairly poor quarterbacks. Roethlisberger was the exception, and he carved us up. Prior to that, our pass rush was getting nowhere outside of some opportunistic plays by Avril. But even those plays usually happened when a QB left the pocket. If he stayed, we were doomed.

Kris Richards' blitzing tendencies showed a lot of potential to cover over those gaps. Good timing, good execution. But we can't be relying on the blitz all the time. I'd like to see how well we fare against a red-hot Kirk Cousins, then whomever we meet after that, before I judge.

Edge pressure has not been an issue. Many, many times Avril, Irvin, or Bennett beat their blocks enough, only to have a QB step forward to avoid the pressure.

As stated, up-the-middle, collapse-the-pocket type pressure is a need. Creative blitzing may or may not be the answer. All blitzes come at a cost to coverage. That said, we may see more blitzing against our next quality QB matchup (which will likely be in the playoffs). I think it needs to be done more aggressively and more creatively. Seems like I have seen a lot of Wagner or KJ coming in on a delay, then not finding an interior lane- so they jump and wave their arms from behind the pile as the pass is thrown. And the tackles need to be in on what is going on (?) to hopefully help open things up to allow the blitz to get home.

I think in the speed package, Bennett and Clark can get it done often enough to be a factor, but both of them are "light" for interior linemen.

Mebane just does not look as mobile as in the past.

Anyone know when Hill is scheduled to return?
