Eric Williams has this article on the tribune blog from a talk he had recently with Okung. MMA training does seem like it's becoming more popular amongst NFL athletes, and I can see why it could be a very good training tool especially for the line positions.

Okung said he’s taken up a regular regimen of MMA work in his hometown of Houston to help improve his quickness, agility and flexibility for the upcoming season

I had an opportunity to talk with Okung about his new workout plan and other things this morning. The Oklahoma State University product doesn’t talk much with reporters during the season, so today provided a chance to kick around a number of different topics.

Interesting. I wish they delved a little more into what the MMA work actually is...I mean, does it involve sparring or is it a glorified Tae Bo-type workout? Does anyone know?

I generally skim linked articles, but am glad that I read that all the way through. A very good read. I was really impressed with his forward-thinking as it pertains to life after football.

The MMA training I have seen seems to have changed a lot. In the beginning it was a lot more grappling and now they seem to be doing a lot of heave bag with punches and kicks. The way they teach you to work from a stable base, pass leverage, get free and use his big body can only make him better. Maybe we should start calling this the RW effect. The whole team seems to be really working hard off season

I did MMA for years and I'll say most of the "MMA Training" outside of actual striking or ground work drills are pretty much the same exercises in circuit training, Physical Therapy, plyometrics, P90x, Insanity and Crossfit.

All kind of the same thing, workouts with high intensity, little to no rest time, often times no weights used, works a lot of core and stability muslces at the same time rather than isolations.

I guess bottom line is whatever discipline you choose to do/try, it all does work.

MMA training relates to the intense conditioning required for a 3 Round fight. Its core stabilization and strenghting, conditioning, breathing, agility drills.

Not sure why everyone assumes the only thing MMA Fighters do is roll around on the ground and throw bags around

Good tidbit in the article about Carpenter:

Like he did in 2012, Okung expects teammate offensive guard James Carpenter to have a breakout season in 2013 if he can stay healthy. Seattle’s first round pick in 2011, Carpenter finished last season on the injured reserve after coming back early from reconstructive knee surgery.

“Tom does a great job of getting our room really together, so when a guy does go down, somebody else has something to bring,” Okung said. “But James, he’s an animal. When he’s healthy, he’s hard to beat. I don’t think there’s a guy who can line up over him and really say they can beat him, when he’s healthy.

“Just like me, I believe he’ll come back from the injury. I think the best is yet to come for him.”

Honestly there is no such thing as set "MMA Training" lol.

I've been in four different MMA gyms, and even in those gyms they had different classes for different groups. The afternoon workout crew, the diehards, the competition group, the pro group, and even of those groups there were different workouts for them depending if they had a fight/match/competition/tournament coming up or not.

Anyway some of the gyms focused on a lot of ground, some striking, some liked to mix up the drills where it was both in one, some really liked to separate the disciplines, then had you mix it up only in sparring (lets face it MMA boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, and jiu jitsu is really unstructured compared to pure boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and jiu jitsu). i.e. Some groups just make u do striking drills with foot work with bags and mitts. Some like to make you work a bag and then mix in sprawls, ground and pound, then back to striking.

Oh and I've been to MMA gyms where the beginner classes do feel like more "glorified Tae Bo" like you said. Where it's Tae Bo IMO, but higher intensity and you actually learn clean striking techniques and maybe actually hit something for once lol.

Hopefully he doesn't get confused on gameday and beat the crap out of someone.

Confused, yes that's it commissioner I was confused when I took him down with a leg sweep and stomped on his chest
