This isn't a rebuild though, they're signing a bunch of aging vets -- therein lies the problem. This team has a lot of holes and we're approaching the situation like we're going to be competitive. It would have been the perfect opportunity to blow up the roster, especially since we're switching defensive schemes.
It feels like we're trying to plug up the holes on a sinking ship. This roster needed to be blown up with the exception of young, core talent.
You sign vets so you can still be competitive. Competitiveness makes young players better. Thinking that just throwing young guys and rookies in there that are not ready as a great pathway to team or individual success is why the Browns are the Browns, and not the Patriots. You develop young core talent around veteran leaders.
It applies to almost all Teaching professions, and remember what a Coach really is.
A coach is someone who trains a person or team of people in a particular sport.
"Your veterans are the players you count on because you know who they are. They’re more reliable and provide certain intangibles in key moments that only come with experience. Oftentimes, vets are the anchor of your team, whether they’re your team’s superstar or a role player. Having a cagey veteran is like having a second coach on the field, court or ice, as they’re able to guide other members of your team, call plays and
maintain order. When your long-term players know your system, style and habits inside-and-out, they very rarely let you down."
"Veterans are the heart of your team."
"Rookies are a completely different story. Rookies bring a
spark and excitement to your team that veterans simply cannot, as they are somewhat of a wild card. You’re never really certain what you have with a rookie until they get actual playing time, but the influx of new energy and enthusiasm is vital to keeping your team’s edge. And there are some advantages that all rookies bring to the table."
Who’s the MVP of your team: the seasoned veterans or the enthusiastic rookies? Is one group of players more integral to your season’s success?
