I think Bennett earned it, they payed Zach Miller 11 million in '13 so why not pay 10 mill to Bennett in '14. Seattle will get it done won't be easy but it will get done. I would let Bryant,Clemons, and both McD's walk this offseason. Draft either K.Quarles,B.Urban, or S.Tuitt in the first round to replace T. McDaniel. Then go back in get Deandre Coleman or Ed Stinson in the third or 4th round to help replace Red Bryant. Seattle's roster spots are so valuable that you have to expect Jordan Hill and Benson Mayowa to take over for McDonald/Clemons. Basically build around Bennett and let Mebane play out his contract. Get young and cheap on the D-line plus have two all-pro to lead the way for the next generation, much like the offensive line(Okung,Unger). Avril will move on after his contract is up becuase Avril's money will be needed to help extend Sherman.

Cut: Bryant, Clemons, McDaniel, McDonald and give their money to Bennett. Hill replaces McDonald and Irvin/Mayowa replace Clemons. The wild card is the MONSTAR jesse williams if he can step up and replace Bryant that would help but would'nt bet on it.

Seattle could also cut McQuistan,Rice, and Miller to save about 13 mill to pay E. thomas, Giacomini, and Hauschka.

I dub this the Jerrah Jones post of the day.

I said this once and I'll say it again. No way the Hawks pay him 10Mil/year.

I expect the JS to draft a 6-4/6-5 270-275 DE and convert him ton a DT situational pass rusher. He went after Jason Jones and Greg Scuggs and they fit that mold.

On a side note, I think Bennett should get paid and if another team is willing to do this.....great for him.

Good points. Thanks Kearly for reminding me how much of a long time coming interior penetration was. You're right, we probably should be putting a premium on retaining him.

I still think that if he's talking $10m/per as an average that it's still too steep, but if we can jig it so he gets a big $10m payday in year 1, then level out to something a little more cap friendly in subsequent years, that ain't so bad.

I hope to hear something soon though one way or the other. The speculation is going to drive us all mad. :p

Bennett isn't going anywhere.

Last thing he wants is a repeat of the dog-left-at-the-kennel incident...

I don't know why we're comparing Atkins and Bennett - Bennett does move inside for pass-rushing snaps, but he lines up as a DE most downs?

Almost exactly 50-50 last season, with the pressure rates inside and out being virtually identical.

JS said they won't be tagging him. Not surprising.

Asked by Around The League if the franchise tag is a possibility for Bennett, Schneider replied, "I don't anticipate that. No."

Must mean that the current negotiations are well below the franchise tag number, and/or that JS is too much of a high road guy to franchise Bennett as a DT.

Michael Silver interviewed, said he talked to a Seahawks source that told him the team feels it's "50/50" they keep Bennett at this stage. Definitely contradicts the language Ian Rapaport used a few weeks ago.

This coupled with the franchise tag news means that the FO has a number in mind and will stick to it, a number per year that is presumably below the franchise tag amount.

Bennett is a stud but in terms of paying top-tier money you can only afford to do that with a few players. Russ/Earl/Sherm/Harvin (and with Sherm I think most of us all are sort of okay with 10-12 but flatly not okay above that).

10 is too much for Bennett although his interior pressure was pretty drool-worthy. Losing a little of that might well mean our defense is "merely" the best in the league, not historically good, but that's where a full year of Harvin and a year-older SB-champ Russ can hopefully make up for it a little.

Not sure if it's worth anything, but John Clayton speculated on the radio that Seattle's ceiling on Bennett is at $8 million per.

Exactly what we all have been saying. But what is his reasoning beyond pure guessing?

Bennett already effectively took a discount by signing a one-year contract. He bet on himself, that he would play above his contract price and attract much better offers from around the league after the season... And it worked for him. No need to be bitter, the Seahawks certainly could have signed him to a longer contract in the first place. He obviously is placing a bit more money ahead of a bit less money plus a better work environment, which is a tradeoff everyone makes who is in a position to do so. Shoot, I could probably make more $$ if I went somewhere else (an engineering degree opens a lot of doors, I've found!), but I'm making the opposite tradeoff of work environment instead of more money. Tate already said he would lean the other way from Bennett, it all depends on what's important to you.

He has that right but our situation I don't see us going to 10 million for him. It doesn't make sense for the Seahawks to do so. But I'm not mad at him if gets that kind of offer and leaves that's his choice. Then again I value a workplace that's harmonious versus better money if all things are even. Everyone has their own preferences.

Yes he took a discount and bet on himself, he also is now a world champion because of the team around him and the culture here. It's a matter of a few million and a team that rewards him by showing they value him and take care of their own but value a team as well, or going someplace that will give him more but may not have the culture to make a impact in the league in the near future since it would be needing more pieces to compete.
