In addition, if you hadn't heard, the Blue Jays signed Kazuma Okamoto for 4 years, $60 million. The word was that the Mariners were interested in signing the Japanese star third baseman.

Yeah, I really thought they might be in on him. Pretty reasonable contract too.

Okamoto I thought was an option. Marte I never saw as an option at all.

I'm very surprised the Mariners don't push harder for Japanese players with the success of Ichiro and Sasaki here. I get it's a 2 way street and the player has to want to come here but I am surprised we've been in on few and with the history haven't pushed harder. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors, just surprising to me honestly.

I don't understand the deal with Okamoto. Maybe teams were scared away by his injury last year? But he is only 29, a good-fielding third baseman with power. He seemed like a good fit for the Mariners, especially at that price.
