I think last time I read Seattle was somewhere in the middle as far as market size, so like 13th or 14th biggest market?

Certainly nowhere near the big boys like NY, LA, Chicago, Boston, etc.......not a shocker that these are the teams that break the bank for players.

Just saying we've all seen this movie. Mariners are interested, Mariners are in the lead for a player!.........then *poof* gone to the Yankees or Angels.

Mariners had consistently been in the top 8 or so in payroll for about a decade until 2010 when the team just stopped trying.

We signed Cano, an enormous free agent, and offered more than anyone, we paid Felix an enormous amount, we're a team with potential for playoff runs... this market is a contender.

I'm not saying it's impossible, and certainly momentum is on our side with locking up Felix, Seagar, Cano and now Cruz.

But how many times have we heard the M's are in the running for a player? I think sometimes Seattle is used as a leverage club by agents to drive up the price, when everyone involved knows damn well it's never going to happen. I think that happened last year with Hamilton. Thank god we didn't sign him, because he's a stiff of biblical proportions.

Yup. The M's offered more money than LA, but Hamilton said no and took the Angel's offer. THANK YOU HAMILTON!

If he had accepted, the M's would have sucked for another 5+ years. The only reason the Angels have survived the Pujols and Hamilton signings is because of Mike Trout. The M's would not have overpaid to sign Cano, and they would be a disaster right now.

Ken Rosenthal says M's have been talking to Nationals about Ian Desmond and the Nats like Brad Miller as part of the return package. That would be a HUGE upgrade at SS for this year. But the same things to consider as a deal for Upton: would have to give up a lot of pieces for a 1 year rental, although Desmond is a little cheaper than Upton for that one year.

I don't think anything gets done, but interesting rumor nonetheless.

Peterson I am not sure if he makes the opening roster. Rookies tend to fade like Jones did. I think it depends on the status of Bloomquist. If can't go he might make it as the backup. However I think they prefer he plays everyday.

I don't see any deals made this week. They are looking for a 2 yr deal for an outfielder.

There's a article out saying the M's could have got Trumbo from Arizona in a three team trade with the Blue Jays. Basically the M's give Saunders and Elias and get Happ and Trumbo in return. I like Elias but I would have pulled the trigger on that deal. Here's the link http://sodomojo.com/2014/12/09/mariners ... de-rumors/
hopefully that worked.

With all the activities of the AL West counterparts, is it possible the Ms have already done enough to win the division? Would this cause them to wait on an outfielder until next years far better FA class?

So as a casual, and admittedly fair weather mariners fan, who wants to take a shot for me at the opening day lineup and 5 man pitching rotation as of right now?

I would have done that trade in a second. Trumbo always has a bad average, but so do many of the Mariners players. He has proven power, plays multiple positions, and is under team control until 2017. Would have been nice.

Felix
Iwakuma
Paxton
Happ
Elias (or Walker if he has a strong enough spring training)

Lineup? Hard to tell cause hopefully we'll be adding another bat and looks like we're shopping Miller.

Jackson
Ackley
Cano
Cruz
Seagar
Cabrera!
Morrison
Zunino
Miller

Here are some recent news headlines around MLB that effect the Mariners (as they have been associated with or linked to these players in one way or another)...

- Kendrys Morales agrees to 2-year deal with the K.C. Royals. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/10382...als-agree-to-2-year-deal-with-kendrys-morales

- Yeonis Cespedes has been traded to the Detroit Tigers. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/10380...oenis-cespedes-from-red-sox-for-rick-porcello

- Matt Kemp traded to the S.D. Padres. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12014056/los-angeles-dodgers-san-diego-padres-agree-matt-kemp-deal

It looks like our most likely OF options are now Alex Rios, Melky Cabrera or Dayan Viciedo. Out of these three, Cabrera would probably be the best choice.

Also, rumors of a possible new SS for Seattle; says a trade is in the works... https://twitter.com/JimBowden_ESPN/status/543121358398300161

Jack Z was on with Softy talking about the Cruz trade a couple weeks ago and he said the 5th spot is going to be open to whoever wins it in camp, he specifically mentioned Walker, Elias and Ramirez.

I'm sure everyone involved wants Walker to step up and nail down a spot in the rotation, but if he struggles in spring I don't think Jack or McClendon have a problem with three lefties.

at this point I value Elias more then Walker based off what each has shown us so far. I think Elias (if they keep him) will probably move to spot starter/long relief. But hell Elias is 25 and made the jump from AA to a very serviceable rookie starter. I don't think he is coveted because he was undrafted unlike what was invested in Walker/Paxton/Hultzen. Also remember Hultzen is also a lefty. Elias ran out of gas last year but had stats very similar to Happ, however you have to think Elias is only going to get better while Happ has probably peaked.

thats a tough call, I don't like the idea, however I also don't like the idea of losing out on him.
