Plus saved considerable money. Where's the downside even if he IS a lateral move, which has yet to be established? Look, not all of us can be the 49ers with a history of intentionally violating the salary cap and shoving bags of money to guys under tables, ok?
It's exactly as you said, moving from the known to the unknown. But if you weren't making the playoffs with the known consistently , making the move might be worth it

And now the Niners make Fred Warner the highest paid LB.

Sources: 49ers, Fred Warner reach 3-year, $63M extension

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- After completing lucrative contract extensions with quarterback Brock Purdy and tight end George Kittle in recent weeks, the San Francisco 49ers had one more key player to take care of to wrap up their most pressing offseason business: linebacker Fred Warner.

On Monday, the Niners and Warner checked that box as he agreed to a three-year, $63 million contract extension, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal ties Warner to the team through the 2029 season. The reworked deal also returns Warner to the top of the list of highest-paid off-ball linebackers in the league at $21 million per season and adds $56 million in guaranteed money to a deal that no longer had any, the sources told Schefter.

It's like Lynch is playing a game of "Can you top that" in terms of handing out overpay'ing contracts, and he's the only participant in that game.

The older I get, the more I'm definitely all about pursuing another ring at all costs, I'm not that interested in being a perennial "wild card contender" and that's it.

Niners had no choice, whatsoever, they had to do this. What's their alternative? Time will tell if it dooms their cap like Russell did to the Hawks. And I'm not as down on Purdy as most here, I think he's somewhere between good and great.

They had no choice here. Fred Warner is the best linebacker in the NFL, and he's only 28. He's the clear leader of that defense.

I would even argue that he's a bargain at that price. There's really no other MLB close to him in the league.

Just read that Purdy's team came in asking for 65 mil per year. I understand that was just a starting point...but damn.

We really need to see the details of the Purdy contract before we can make honest comparisons. It’s entirely possible that the cap hits for the two players will be essentially identical for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Purdy’s guarantee is 36.2 million APY, but I’m sure the contract will be structured to delay as much cap hit as possible.
