Contracts are public, and any of us, just like the staff of 30 other teams, can look at the Niners and Rams contracts, and calculate their cap.

I can understand the urge to believe that they cheat the cap. I can certainly understand the belief that these teams would try. What I can’t believe is that anyone would actually believe that these teams are actively cheating, and the 30 other teams haven’t caught them.

The same tools they use to manipulate the cap are available to, and used by, other teams in the league.

The whiners were just caught cheating on the cap last year.

Of course, it was just a "clerical error".....but they still lost a draft pick over it. From a fan's perspective....the NFL said all the right things, it was all an accident, there was no attempt to circumvent the cap, yadda yadda yadda. But they still took away a draft pick. Sounds like they let them save face but sent a warning.

Exactly my point. “Clerical errors,” like this, give substance to the belief that teams are cheating the cap.

But, even something relatively minor, like overpaying a player $75,000, is absolutely noticed by the rest of the league.

There is no evidence that this was self-reported by the Niners. Someone noticed it, someone reported it, and the league took action.

If they lost a draft pick, and had another knocked to a later round, over a $75k “error,” how can people believe they are getting away with multi-million dollar cheating on the regular?

It would be like believing deflategate could happen in a league where the ref checks the ball pressure before every snap, and every team has a team of guys assigned to be certain the pressure checks took place, the gauges used were correctly calibrated, etc.

Some teams are just better at pushing the boundaries of the cap management rules, but these techniques aren’t “get out of jail free cards.”

Eagles, Niners, and Rams are really good at this game. Saints use the same techniques, but suck at it.

I can foresee a world where void years, and multiple mid-contract restructures, are banned. They favor the richer owners who are willing to push the rules.

Purdy's contract looks to be a 3 year contract for about $116 Million with a decision year to consider in 2028. The 49ers can walk away with a dead cap hit of about $16 Million in pre-June 1st 2028. Or agree to a re-negotiated extension in 2028.

Purdy's contract strikes me as a reasonable contract for an NFL starting quarterback. Somewhat similar to the cost for Sam Darnold's three year contract.

It's not a 3 year deal. The 49ers can get out of the contract after 1 season for $100M. If they chose to get out after 2 seasons another $15.346M will have become fully guaranteed, ($115.346M total cost). If they don't exit at that point all $55.05M of 2028 money will become fully guaranteed, ($170.396M). Only $7.154M of 2029 salary guarantees before the 4th year of the deal in 2028 so realistically it's a 2-year £115.364M deal or a 4-year $177.55M deal. 3 years at $170.396M would be terrible business.

To quote the cherynobyl series
"not great, but not horrifying."
I cringe for niners fans only because I'm not in love with his body type or his injury history.

I'd argue he's more durable than Darnold. He's only missed 2 starts. He came back from major elbow reconstruction in one off season. He's a small guy but he is shifty

Purdy does basically everything at a high level. Obviously there's division rival bias here, but I think a lot of the ripping on him is lazy analysis assuming he's not talented because he was drafted so late.

And this is the last fan base that should be stuck in the idea that a player can't be great if they have a good team around them. Look how many advantages Russell Wilson had. I'm sure any QB would have been thrilled to have had the kind of defense that only allows eight points to a record-setting offense in the Super Bowl. Fans so ardently come to Kam Chancellor's defense in any HOF talks. How many defensive "stars" have been in a more perfect situation than he was, having one of the greatest cover safteys ever to pick up his slack, in addition to Richard Sherman being a generational coverage guy, and having Bobby Wagner in front of him. Hell, none of those LOB guys were doing it on their own. That team as a whole had very few players with anything resembling the same level of success outside of Seattle.

Sometimes good players are good. Having good teammates doesn't take from that.
Nah, I don't need your non biased reasoning ruining my personal assessment of Purdy. He sucks, niners suck and I'll throw a fish at anyone who says different.

People point to last year as proof that Purdy's not that good, but the 49ers last year were decimated, not only with CMC and Aiyuk gone and Trent Williams injured a lot, but the defense ranked near the bottom of the league. And Purdy dealt with his own injuries. Still, in 15 games he still completed 66% of his passes for over 3800 yards.
People were questioning Purdys talent level before last year, believing he would look rather pedestrian without the all star supporting cast.
Last year was the evidence that those beliefs were true.
I would bet that CMC, Aiyuk and Williams ( you can throw kittle in there too) will never see the level of health or dominance they showed before. As far as the defense goes I don't think they will be as dominant as years past either. Their level of aggressiveness won't be the same when they aren't playing with a lead. If the offense doesn't play as well defense will be tired due to a less favorable T.O.P and shorter fields to defend.
No, I don't have proof or stats and I don't need them. All my life I've done alright listening to my gut and believing my eyes.

I've watched Purdy enough to see that he's not just pedestrian. He's accurate and quick and makes good decisions. He's not Burrow or Mahomes, but he was good enough that you had to pay him.

The 49ers will experience a predictable, cyclical downturn as they have to pay some stars, lose some pieces and see the aging of their core. But that's going to happen regardless of who their QB is. We're also seeing the Chiefs and Mahomes go through the same thing.

Not disagreeing with you, @SeaofGreen, but just not putting it all on Purdy, or should I say, not putting it on the decision to pay Purdy.

Def had to sign him. But if they don’t draft well the next couple years they will be an awful team. This is what happens when you pay a few players. Don’t have enough money to keep great ones.

I agree overpaying a QB causes a predictable downturn that most teams that experience success (except the browns who go through it without having success) generally go through, including my beloved Hawks, however...we have 9er fans that are arrogant enough to open their mouths in our house so I just enjoy it so much more when it's the 9ers!
I love the sound of their crying, the taste of their tears and the smell of their fear and the sight of them getting their asses handed to them.
I'm more of a Hawk fan than a 9er hater but not by much. I get about the same amount of enjoyment watching SF lose as I do seeing the Hawks win.

49ers were not losing last year all due to Purdy and offense. It was mostly the worst rated special teams unit in the league and a terrible run defense. Purdy's "pedestrian" season was still in the top half of the league in all categories

IMHO, the number one reason that the Niners had such an atrocious last year, was the ungodly number of injuries to key players.

I know, every team deals with injuries, but the volume of weeks simultaneously missed by multiple key players, at key parts of the season, really made it impossible for the team to play to their potential.

I know people here are going to dog on this as an excuse, but it has to be taken into consideration, especially when considering what the future might look like.

The question is, was it all wear and tear that has been repaired in one extended off season, or is it wear and tear that is irreparable, and will impact the current Niners in perpetuity.

This year, with the favorable schedule, and the extended off season, should answer that question
