If that's the case, then expect more of the same in this upcoming game against the Texans.

Doubt it, unlike Jacksonville, Houston doesn't live or die by their defensive takeaways.

While Pitre is a hell of a safety, with something like a 56 passer rating against, his 3 interceptions don't particularly stand out.

His first came off Lawrence on a 3rd and 10, heave and a prayer, with Jacksonville trailing 10-3, with 9.5 minutes left in the game. It was a solid interception with good anticipation and positioning, but came in an obvious passing situation and distance, on a poorly thrown ball.

His other two came against Cooper Rush. The first at 12:57 in the third, 3rd and 10, with Baltimore trailing 24-7. Rush heavily underthrew the ball, and Pitre made a diving interception.

The second came with 1:38 left in the game, and Baltimore trailing 41-10. Mark Andrews bobbled the ball extensively, trying to run down field, instead of focusing on the catch, and Pitre came in and took it away.

I did the best I could to find embeddable links.

All in all, it's stifling defense, but not one who relies on turnovers to win the game. I don't think that ball security will be as big of an issue in this game, especially when considering Sam Darnold >>> than Cooper Rush and Cam Ward.

Kubiak hasn't moved away from the run even as it is consistently stuffed. To some, that's frustrating (too conservative) because it's wasted downs and a fail. However, it has a direct benefit to the pass game and has helped SDarnold (and JSN). It's a difficult balance but it's mostly working. The balance Kubiak is using looks like a failing run game that leads to overall victories. That's pretty ok....

When Ds unload the box to double JSN and cover, can the run adapt and pick up the slack? I'd guess that Kubiak is purposefully calling boring runs up the middle while the pass game is humming. Let's hope (expect?) he has a collection of more creative running plays when needed.

Good stuff guys. I do think Kubiak will lean on Sam slightly more moving forward but not a ton.

As I have pointed out in other threads, the Seahawks lead the league in 12 and 22 personnel sets. It does a couple of things.

1 - It baits the defense into stacking the box, opening up the successful deep routes that Darnold, JSN, Kupp etc have feasted on.

2 - It opens up play action that Barner et al have feasted on.

3 - It bolsters an offensive line that desperately needs it.

4 - It makes for tough running, but if you don't keep pounding your unsuccessful head against the defensive wall you've forced them to build, they won't respect these sets if you don't try.

The running game is successful, just not at getting yards on the ground.

My takeaways from Mike's press conference and radio show - Kubiak is doing exactly what his head coach wants. He does want more production out of the run game (of course), but he does want to continue to use the run game to help the play action.

Certainly Macdonald has seen what happens when you give up on the run entirely - that's basically what Grubb did. He's not going to let that happen again.

Was listening to Colin Cowherd podcast and one of the things he pointed out was that young teams generally have issues closing out games and that it comes with experience. In this case he talked about the Seahawks and Packers both being the 2 youngest teams and both having those issues. He thinks it will come in time and partly why he is so high on both.

We are probably going to see that play run, and it will result in a deep throw to a wide open receiver. Something Kubiak does, that Grubb and Waldron never seemed to, is to run plays in one game that are designed to set up future defenses.

I also love watching defenses adjust, in game, to our pre-snap alignment, then watching Darnold have options in the play call for that adjustment. Darnold and JSN torched Jacksonville for seven when this happened.

My issue with Kubiak is that his conservative play calling has cost us a game and almost cost us a few more.

His approach of setting up big plays certainly works, but I think at some point you need to shift gears. Especially against better teams it will end up costing you.

I’m not advocating for a Grubb like attack, what I am advocating for is leaning a bit more on Darnold to set up the running attack like Holmgren did back in the day.

But the play action off that set is brilliant. Darnold running to the wide side against the flow of the defence. Opens up the play action pass or the QB run.

So like it or not, we will keep running wide zone plays to the short side.

Not every play is run to succeed wildly. Some are set up plays to get to something else in the play book late in the game. Because you can't win the game in the firs quarter.

We've lost two games both in the dying moments when we a) had the lead in the final 3 minutes and b) when we had a chance to come back and win, we turned the ball over on, get this, passing plays.

Our two losses are on the defense and the OL failing. Not the conservative play calling.

Yeah, I'd say those were on player execution, not play calling.

They've already done that a few times with a ton of success. It completely moves the entire front 7 and gives Darnold more time and space
