Source tells me Bills concerned Kevin Kolb's concussion may be career-ending and they're proceeding with that in mind.

Per @AdamSchefter, Kevin Kolb has a "serious" concussion and the Bills will proceed as if it's career-ending: http://es.pn/17WL0oK

It's not like the Steve Young situation where you would take whatever he could give (upon return)....Kolb has no form to return to. I hope for his success in his next endeavor.

That was my first thought after learning of his injury and confirmed after seeing the highlight. Nobody hit him, he's done he's just not durable.

Poor guy. Nobody should have to go out like that. Hopefully he gets out one hit too early rather than one hit too late. I'm sure he's going to be ok financially, but concussions are scary. They are so easy to get subsequent concussions. I remember talking to Steve Young right as he was going into his last NFL season. He just seemed confused. He's made big strides and improved a lot...but it hasn't been an easy road.

There was a guy that I went to school with and he lived a couple of apartments over named Dustin Johnson. He was on the Seahawks after he played at BYU and he was set to be the starting fullback. He got a severe concussion in the last preseason game, and ultimately had to take an injury settlement. When they did a brain scan, they found a lot of damage and actually had to go in and relieve pressure on his brain. He had formed a non-cancerous tumor on his frontal lobe I believe, and it was identified due to his feeling increasingly sick and disoriented prior to the helmet-to-helmet knock he took in his last game for the Hawks.

The scary stuff happened later. He ended up living in the neighborhood where I taught and had bought a home with the cash he got on his settlement and then started a business with the help of Itula Mili (who was still with the Hawks). This supported Dustin and he's done ok financially, but physically and mentally he has struggled. He gets lost easily. Thankfully he has a great support system in his neighborhood that helps him to get things taken care of. Nicest guy in the world. To see a "real person" get it and struggle mightily is quite a life changer in how you view things.

Hopefully Kolb gets out and was wise with his money for his own and his family's sake. Guys want to maximize their money and play to set up their families for life and such, but don't die because of it. I think he's a pretty smart guy and will likely get a broadcasting job of some sort (they seem to be a dime a dozen for former players that are interested, especially QB's because of their unique perspective).

I do have to concur that Buffalo was a bit silly in going with only 2 QB's, one being a rookie and the other being a guy who has been concussed multiple times. Not smart roster management. My guess is Leinart will be starting week 1 with maybe 7 practices under his belt.

And people say that Flynn stole money... Kolb's grandchildren won't ever have to work a day in their lives.

and Kolb may not be able to work another day in his life........

I am happy, I am healthy, I make decent money. I have no wish whatsever to a life with $20million in the bank with constant headaches, pain and memory loss 10 years away (or now for some). Sure all that can happen anyways but it is becoming more and more of the norm for football and hockey players.

Cowherd made a point today - getting HGH testing will be the biggest thing for player safety.......

Poor guy, we'll always remember when he tore up the Seahawks in Week 1 last year, and destroyed our chance of getting home field throughout the playoffs and thus going to the Super Bowl. KOOOOLB!!!!!!!

At least the guy cashed in on his one 'somewhat good' season... but damn, that's a tough injury.

Hopefully it just ends his career, and not his quality of life later. He really needs to think hard if he wants to keep playing, because he shouldn't with all that head trauma over his career.

I'd rather have my mind than my money. I'm sure Kolb feels the same way. Hopefully his long term prognosis is positive.

I think at this point he'll just stick on a roster as long as possible, and I think the Bills will keep him there while they work through this with the insurance company (much like the Yankees have tried to do with A-Rod). Kolb is smart enough to not just up and retire. He likely won't play anytime soon, but he's wise to just keep things open. I hope he gets to work as a guest analyst or something, because current or very recently retired players (QB's in particular) offer insight that many of us have no idea about. They open up a whole world that the average fan doesn't see in their analysis and commentary. I've heard interviews with Kolb, and he seems to have a really good grasp on the game and the intricacies. I'm sure he has other options. Plus it might mean that Rich Gannon will stop being assigned to Seahawks games if Kolb bumps him as the #7 TV crew color man. :)
