The Times They Are A changin

Yeah they are. And they've been trending this direction in a variety of ways (political, economic, and cultural) since the early 1980s. That the NFL is turning itself into a foot soldier in that change -- and in case that so obviously has nothing at all to do with the game itself -- is however, really disheartening, if not unexpected, IMO.

*Just as evidence for how much things have changed, there was a huge and well-deserved public backlash when the NBA's magazine airbrushed out Iverson's tattoos in 2000, whereas with this, it would be generous to say that people don't even care (as instead, public sentiment seems to be trending in the opposite direction).

Just like how it's lying/covering up that gets people like Goodell fired, I have a real problem with Kaepernick claiming that he didn't say the word. Just 'fess up. Let's be real, a LOT of the black community uses that word.

Rather slimy way of handling the whole thing, Kaep.
I as someone that isn't a Rog fan, think you make a legit point here. Krapperchoke is lucky he didn't get his ass kicked!
The fallout from the coverup is usually worse than the "crime"'for lack of a better word.

Either way, it would seem that the Santa Clara 49ers need to do a better job of educating their players about the rules. They seem to be getting flagged quite a bit. Maybe Lockette can draw him a picture so it makes more sense.

Pretending that there's more to this comment than just the 49ers-focused potshot (and that's pretty rare here these days), it's not about educating players about the existence of the rule. All of them know.

They're getting flagged for it because it's a new legislation of vernacular speech. It's legislating a word that is not used derogatorily among the vast majority of AA NFL players. FWIW Lamarr Houston got flagged for it yesterday. It's like if the NFL decided that saying "dude" or "bro" was a 15 yard penalty for being derogatory; there's a lot of white players (and non-white players, in this example) who would get flagged for it not because they didn't know the rule existed, but because it's a natural part of speech for them and in the moment with a lot of other stuff going on they'd slip up and accidentally say "back up, dude" or "get out of here, bro" or whatever.*

*(This counter-example is, sadly, rhetorically effective because the suggestion that the NFL would start legislating the common vernacular speech of white players (or otherwise) is laughable --- "you can say f*ck, sh!t, m*therf$cker, @sshole whatever, it's all fair game, you just can't call each other 'dude' anymore").

My first paragraph was an actual response. The 2nd paragraph (which you quoted) was clearly just a potshot but it also reflects my feeling on the topic in a small way. I think that the whining and complaining about SF being unfairly targeted is a joke. Hence the potshot and poking with a stick.

Everybody feels differently about what Kaepernick was flagged for. Personally, I don't care what they say on the field. I don't see many people flagged for it when I'm watching games on Sunday so I'd assume that he simply failed to abide by the rule unlike 99% of the rest of the players on every roster in the league.

Thing is, when you take the whining about this flag and combine the whining about all of the other flags, it just sort of makes that fan base look like a bunch of babies (Boldin as well).

I defended criticism of SF when another SEA fan posted about their running game in week 1 because I disagreed with what was said. I'm ragging on Marv and poking him with a stick because I disagree with what he said. Same goes for lvnginthepast.

That said, I still reserve the right to dump on the Niners whenever and wherever possible if I feel like it might give Marvin bitter beer face.

Well seeing as a large number of the players in the NFL are black how many times do you guesstimate the "N" word is used between players on a daily basis?

Are you implying that it's used more commonly on the field and that they just chose to flag him for it or that it's used off of the field so much that it should be allowed on the field?

Either way, it would seem that the Santa Clara 49ers need to do a better job of educating their players about the rules. They seem to be getting flagged quite a bit. Maybe Lockette can draw him a picture so it makes more sense.

I'm saying either the word is wrong or its not, don't care if you're black, white or green from Mars, or if it had er or ar at the end. And rules need to apply to all players.

Nobody here or involved with the 9ers org has "whined" about the 49ers being unfairly targeted with this flag. If anything the only person who has publicly "whined" about the new enforcement of this penalty is Richard Sherman.

I've repeatedly given him a TON of credit for that, but I guess you think he was just whining.

Of course that's your right, and you don't even need to reserve it. Since I've been here empty potshots and just deliberately trolling posters for the heck of it has become the normal mode of discourse. It's 90% of every 9ers thread now...and...wait for it...what makes all the ranting about the webzone that goes on increasingly laughably, IMO.

Still not clear what your point is. Are you saying that it's wrong or right? Last time I checked, the rule does apply to ALL players (black or white). Leaving me utterly confused as to what your point actually is.

I'm of the notion this is one of many aftershocks from the social earthquake of the 60s.

Bob Dylan began work on his third album "The Times They Are A Changin on August 6, 1963, at Columbia's Studio A in New York City. The finished album was released on released on January 13, 1964 by Columbia Records.

With regard to the first quote, you're choosing to limit the scope of my statement to the flag on Kaep. Not the case (as I stated). Marvin has made it abundantly clear that he feels that they have been unfairly targeted.

As for the second... Oh well. I'll try to not to cry myself to sleep tonight.

No problem. Deleted my last post on the last page out of respect for the request. :th2thumbs:

That said, this is the wrong forum for the discussion on .net, but is there actually another non-pointless discussion to be had about this? If you take the politics out of it -- and how they explain both Kap and Houston's handling of this situation --then you're just left with pages of half-@ssed vitriolic potshots and deliberately trolling Marvin. It's not my place b/c I'm not a mod (and never will be  ), but if that's preferable to a substantive discussion, with arched eyebrow and all, so be it. ;)

Woops ........ was composing while you were posting.

My apologies ....... although a little Bob Dylan along the way here or there offers perspective then as well as now.

Keep it to the fact that Keap said SOMETHING and the behavior by all parties involved not the race/gender politics surrounding what word MAY have been said. Otherwise the topic may have run it's course unless we get news about Keap's appeal.

If you want to talk about the politics of the words that may have been used start a topic in the PWR forum.

You're accusing me of mistakenly thinking your comment was related to the thread you posted it in? Hey, guilty as charged.

If anyone here or with the 9ers org has said the 9ers were unfairly targeted with this call, by all means, have at it.

Has Marvin even claimed the 9ers have been unfairly targeted or just that bad-call roulette has so far looked upon them unfavorably this season?

It's just stretching to add on to the substanceless ranting and --as you've admitted -- deliberately trolling another poster. It's why I said all the moral high ground about the webzone here has increasingly become a bad joke.

TBH I wasn't really expecting you to cry, or evenly remotely care.

I'm saying in my opinion the word is wrong, I grew up in the south, VA. in the late 60s early 70s before moving to CA. When I lived in VA I lived in a primarily black neighborhood, rarely did I hear any of my friends calling each other ******, the only people using that term were white bigots. Then when I moved to CA. it was being used by blacks in normal conversation and though I got use to hearing it, I still found it offensive. As time has moved on it seems to be more and more a part of everyday life and a word is used widely by many different people of color and more socially accepted. Being as I am old school I still find the word offensive.

Katt Williams is funny as hell, but I can sit through a whole performance because by the first 30 mins he has used it 100 times.

If the majority of players are using it and accept it, like so many other issues the league should just stay out of it.

Hope this clears things up for you

Who cares what Kaeperturkey said?...I sure don't and I don't want him suspended either, as he has losses to accomplish.

For sure. It's why I deleted my last comment immediately upon seeing your post.

My point was just that it's basically impossible to talk about "the behavior by all parties involved" WITHOUT talking about "the race/gender politics surrounding what word MAY have been said." Neither Lamarr Houston's statements nor Kap's statements make a lick of sense without acknowledging what they were talking about; and what went down is exactly what I was hypothesizing what may have gone down before we knew what word Kap may have used.

In any case though, not arguing with you or anything, and fully agreed it's not the right forum for it. I guess I'm just wading through some spilled milk, as given that we can't really talk about the behavior off all parties involved without talking about this stuff, we're left with just another thread of trolling Marvin and (IMO) pretty boring vitriolic ranting. TBF that seems to be mostly my problem though.

Thanks for the clarification, and in tems of the actual outcome, we're on the same page. :th2thumbs:
