They need to figure out a way to measure heart and stress, so many picks have talent thru the roof but when lined up against competition that may not have the God given talent they have outperform in stress and push themselves to another level.

Showing at rookie camp over weight was a big red flag, which led to losing out to Carson in training camp. Penny never quite recovered from that, I started questioning his heart . The recent preseason games were even worse, he looked ...... not a competitor.

He's been a huge disappointment for the last 3 years. The more important question is whether he's worth $1.368M to any NFL team this year. The minimum salary for a 3 year yet in 2021 is $920K. I don't see him being out of the NFL this year but his trade value is near zero.

I feel the word "bust" is pretty extreme, pejorative, and needs to be used carefully, and only then at the end of a career.

Well the OP's question is "IS Penny a bust," as in present tense. Not "will Penny be considered a bust at the end of his career?"

So the context is now, not some future date..........and as of now on 8/30/21? How could you not say he's a bust.

I respect you wanting to wait, but that's not the question nor the context of the discussion.

I agree Sgt... Present tense was the point. Not what he may be at the end of his career. Is he a bust NOW in the minds of fans?

For me, again based on my own personal definition of the term, he very much is a bust. The reason I created this thread/poll is because I am very aware we all have our own definitions of what a bust really is. The thread has not disappointed. Some very well thought out posts and comments.

The fact is that a bust depends on our own expectations of a player based on where they are drafted.

In Penny's case a lot of people look at a RB drafted at 27 and expect someone who will be top ten in rushing attempts, yards and touchdowns for at least their rookie contract.

For them anything short of that would be a bust.

For some any running back drafted in the first round that does not become a generational talent is a bust.

For some being injured and thus unavailable means that the player is a bust.

For me calling someone a bust due to injury is not ok. I can put aside that the team had more important needs and should not have drafted him as some seem to have taken his selection personally. If he stays healthy and underperforms my expectations for a back splitting carries, absolutely a bust.

It took the first injury for him to get some NFL professionalism and the mentorship of Carson helping him work out and reshape his body.

They looked good together for a few games, he looked like he wanted it, was aggressive and attacked the hole both inside and outside.

I did not see that this preseason from him.

Instead I saw a Alex Collins that reshaped his body, attacked everything and was aggressive catching, blocking and running. Not sure if he was working with Carson or not but there is a huge difference, he obviously wants it.

A fat Penny lost out to Carson during his rookie training camp, now a thinner penny lost out to Collins in this training camp. Dude didn't have the mental toughness?

I was happy to get Penny until I realized it was in the first round with Chubb & Michel still on the board. It's notPenny’s fault where he was taken, but he was projected to be 3 rounder and now that appears to be a reach.

Most draft projections had Penny going somewhere in the 2nd.

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/rashaad-p ... 8ffd9467b0

So late 1st isn't THAT much of a reach, especially for a team that needs bell cow physical RB's for how they run their offense like the Hawks.

Penny also didn't have any health or durability issues at San Diego State.

But that's how football goes sometimes, and what makes the draft such a crap shoot. But none of this changes the fact that a RB picked in the 1st round to take over your primary RB role who is now in year three and hasn't done that has to be considered a bust.

In fact, the ONLY thing saving Penny right now from being cut is being drafted in the 1st round. Any other round and he's gone with Dallas and Collins playing well this preseason.
