It’s ALWAYS time to be looking for the next player @ any position.
A lot of truth to that.

Especially......With cable gone, at least we won't be trying to convert a former ballet dancer or something!

So we need to find our new Ballet dancer. With all Due respect to Geekhawk. :rumble:

I think the tackle position (left and right) is definitely one of the places the Hawks need to be looking next year. I'm not meaning starters necessarily, but definitely back-ups at least. Guards seem to have some good talent waiting in the wings it definitely seems like the cupboard is pretty bare at tackle. On the offensive side of the ball, that's about all I really see the Hawks needing to do. Now, defense . . .

He’s played in 32 of 34 possible games with the Seahawks; I’m not ready to say he’s prone to injuries. It wouldn’t hurt to start looking for a replacement, but I think Brown has at least 2 good years left. He’s 4 years younger than Whitworth whose still playing at high level, so it’s at least conceivable that Brown could play at a high level for 4+ years if he wants to.
There are some tackles who play until 40 but history shows that the best tend to retire right around Duane Brown's current age or earlier. Most could still play but decided the level of career earnings and accolades was enough by then to avoid additional wear and tear on their bodies.

Best 42 OTs post-merger

Active LT Jason Peters - age 37
LT Garry Zimmerman - retired age 36 ('97)
LT Art Shell - retired age 36 ('82)
LT Winston Hill - retired age 36 ('77) - converted to RT age 30
RT Ron Yary - retired age 36 ('82)
RT Russ Washington - retired age 36 ('82)
Active LT Donald Penn - age 36
LT Bruce Armstrong - retired age 35 ('00)
LT Richmond Webb - retired age 35 ('02)

Seattle has many needs as it turns out.

Center
CB
Edge
DT
LB

They can't afford anymore mistakes in the first round.

We have Jones who has played well at times and not so well others, I don't think you force the issue, elite LT's are rarely going to fall in a draft however, you have to have player or players your looking at they will fit your scheme as well as a slot on the board and not get cute trying to land him if you like him that much. Fant is also slated to be the LT in waiting as well. As for a blocking TE, there are a lot more LT's that can move and not pass block that can fill that roll then LT's that can do it all sitting on a bench waiting for the running plays that they have to play TE to help block.

Other option is pay a guy who is a F.A., but your also saying we are committing close to 10 million plus to a LT per season.

Free Agent Left Tackle is an oxymoron. Much like pass rushers, they don't come free very often.

Didn't say free, 10 million plus, you would have to outbid his current team or hope he is pissed at them like Brown was.

But teams that value and have one won't or rarely will let him become a F.A. as you stated.

Hopefully they can get a 1st round OT that will play RT for the next couple seasons, then move to LT when Brown retires.

Fant had a rough beginning in his first start at LT this season against the Browns, but finished the game strong which carried over into his second start where PFF gave him the highest grade on the Seahawks OL. Will be interesting to see what the plans for Fant are if they can re-sign him.

Short answer: Always.

IMO, the only scenarios worth using a 1st round pick:

1. QB
2. DE
3. LT
4. Transcendent/unique talent

If it isn't one of those four, I'd trade back every single time. Every other position you can reliably get in the 2nd through 4th round range. And the number of picks in that range you can translate a mid/late 1st to is worth the drop back if you're picking a non premium player.

If a quality tackle drops due to runs on other positions in the draft, I'd take them every single time. Current need be damned. One can virtually always trade OT talent. Especially in a midseason trade where contending teams' health can run afoul at the position. It's a high value position that every contending team needs one very good one and one good one. But not nearly enough talent to go around in the league. Pushing trade value higher.

Yes, but the need for LT is not as great as other needs right now on this roster.

#1: Edge rusher
#2: Safety
#3: Cornerback

Those are your three biggest needs and concerns going into next off season. So yes, Brown isn't getting any younger, but any draft capital over the next 2-3 years HAS to be on the defensive side of the ball if this team wants to get to another SB inside of Wilson's prime.
