This year was supposed to be all about our defense. We had a top 5 D for the vast majority of the year, but when we needed them the absolute most to preserve a slim lead, they let us down. Was it the players, or was it coaching? I don't have the answers, but with RW at the helm on offense, and having the 2nd youngest team in the NFL, our future is very very bright. We certainly exceeded expectations for this year, but JFC this sucks hard.

losing 27-7 would've been worse.

What about Earl Thomas's Interception? The D held for those two ATL possesions to give us the ball with 2 minutes left right?
We had a hell of a run, nitpicking it wont help.

Still lacking pass rush, even bringing the house wasn't getting home enough. Pass rushing DT would help a ton and maybe another DE; starter or depth.

Well said... tons of rips on Bradley going on, despite holding the Falcons down in the second with little pass rush. Need improvement but like you said nitpicking, especially 30 minutes after, won't help

Agreed, but I think you clicked the wrong thread.

The thing about this is that a lot of the plays made by them were indefensible. Our guy was in position and contested, but their Hall Of Fame bound TE or their Pro Bowl wide receivers made great catches while their Pro Bowl QB made great throws.

I have taken more shots at the defense this season than anyone else on this board, blaming them for the losses when we had fourth quarter leads, no matter how many points we scored, but the Falcons simply played a superb game out there offensively.

Why is it the offense never gets any blame, a fumble, two red zone opportunities and they come out with zero points.

In the Miami game they had the ball mid way through the field and couldnt score.
Against Arizona they had 3 chances within 5 yards and still couldn't do anything.

I get that our D is supposed to be the Elite one but its unfair to scapegoat them for every lost.

Well, there is that, yes.

The defense has wasted multiple game-winning drives from RW and would have wasted even more if Russell hadn't have had 2 game winning drives in one game at Chicago.

The offense is what it is, but between the 2 units the defense owns the monopoly on 4th quarter chokes.

-- It shows you that despite pretty good depth, the one spot we were hit be injury this year, ended up killing us, pass rush. Losing your leading sacker one week ago, and having lost your best pass rushing defensive tackle a month earlier, it certainly dents your effectiveness when playing a very good offense.

This D is built to not give up the big play. But it will get gashed a lot, and it is a tall order to keep a team like Atlanta out of field goal range.

Pete has shown unwillingness to depart from his principles when he things they're central, and for defense the big body, stop the run, stop the deep ball is central to his philosophy. Look for more games like this, with the belief that given the odds things will turn out better more often than not.

I just don't see an irony in that. The D overall did a good enough job on a very successful ATL offense and had a chance. It is unfortunate, but I love the path this team is on. This team is SO new and the experience is only going to make them better.

We had a great defense early and then after GB people found a way to dink and dunk against us and they never were ever to find an answer for it.

That needs to be worked on.
