HScanner, I appreciate your compilation of data. Thanks! (tips hat)

We have a lot of reason for optimism. Health is still key for us, but I love our depth right now.

I don't think we have to worry about the 49ers winning out. They will lose two more games-one to us and one the week after.[WINKING FACE]

We definitely have an advantage over both the Saints and the Niners for HFA. The Niners strength of remaining games is very much like ours but we have a heck of an advantage as we already have a one game lead and they have to play the Saints in New Orleans whereas we get them in our house.

Having said that, we do have a couple of trap games looming out there. Despite the fact that the Falcons are without their two star WR's, they can still present some matchup problems for us, and that game with the Giants worries me. Both those games are a ways down the road and both teams could look very different from what we see today.

I hope so. The last thing we need is to lose the tiebreaker with SOS.

Here's a question I can't believe someone hasn't mentioned (unless I somehow missed it): If (and insert here all the obligatory disclaimers about how far down the road this is, we have to still play the games, etc, etc)....

.......if we wrap up homefield advantage prior to the last two home games against Arizona and St Louis......does Pete rest the starters?

It wouldn't fit Pete's normal modus operandi, but I could see him resting them in those games after a few series to keep them in "game shape", and get some extra rest before the playoffs. The perfect season is already off the table, so I could easily see this happening.

What does everyone else think?

I think it's highly unlikely that we can sew up HFA in week 14 given the strength of SF and NO thus far. Even if we beat both, we can't afford to lose an additional 2 games. Obviously, things could change but I'd imagine we probably can't afford do any worse than 14-2 to get HFA. We know for a fact that SF or NO will take another "L" because they play one another, thing is, all three teams are in that predicament.

It's possible for us to beat both and still only be 1 game ahead of either (depending on the outcome of their game against each other).

Did this make sense? Did in my brain but you just never know when I try to apply thought to my keyboard.

Yes. Perfect sense. I should've thought of that. As much as I like to think the Whiners are declining (and that Kap is nowhere near the QB that #3 is), I still have to begrudgingly acknowledge they are still a dangerous team (unless they play us :) ).

I think you're right. It will likely come down to the wire with those two teams.

Even though SF is winning right now if you look closely at their recent games it is clear that their run game is digressing. Gore rarely makes yards after contact. And aside from a few broken coverages or a spectacular catch on a poorly thrown ball their passing game is average at best. We have already shown that we can shut down Boldwin and limit Davis's impact on the field. Barring major injuries and or turnovers/penalties we should have no problem dispatching them in their comparatively quite house.

We should not forget though, that this time we will be playing them in that mud-toilet that is candlestick. Our team always plays a little worse on natural grass because they aren't quite as fast as they are on the manufactured turfs. It provides the Niner's with a decided advantage on offense given their large OL in particular.

That said, I think we have their number and we beat them again. Going to be much closer though unfortunately.
