An opposing team can avoid a single-high safety and still run a reasonably good offense.
Not ours. That's why Earl is so special.

True, he's been able to make a TON of plays as a tackler and in support of Browner/Thurmond. But you also have to concede that part of that is a function of Sherman's ability to stay one-on-one all the time. Allows ET to lean toward the other side or play closer to the LOS.

Look at my post before last. I basically said the same thing. ;)

Thomas every time. His range is the reson why our corners can play for the interception.

This is a stupid question honestly.

While I personally like Sherm more than Earl, the safety position is more important to the overall success of the defense so it's a no-brainer.

How about intangibles that Sherman brings which Earl does not that nobody has mentioned?

There is a case to be made that all the attention Sherman's mouth has gotten us might have a beneficial effect when it comes to officiating, sort of like how the officiating was biased by things like Jerome Bettis being given a key to the city of Detroit leading up to Super Bowl XL, and the like. Plus, I think the Steelers defense benefited for years from officials in mostly small ways because of their hard-hitting reputation.

Sherman is the lead "vote-getter" for DPOY in this week's halfway-point NFL article on front runners for the end of season awards, with 5 (of 11) votes.
Only one other player (Suggs) has more than 1 vote (2).

Yet, I think ET has been better this year...

I voted for Earl simply because I think he enables us to do so many things well. You could make the point (as others have) that he is able to do those things because the Corners are so good that they allow him to concentrate on other things. There are about 31 other teams out there that would kill to have to make a decision like this. I don't like to see any Seahawk's leave and I will surely not be a happy kid the day either of these two do.

We should revisit this conversation the day that both of these guys get paid!

Huh? Do you have any evidence to back this claim? More Super Bowl champs have good corners than good safeties, right?

Doesn't matter. Both will be re-signed, assuming they both continue to be All-Pros[1]. Winning teams almost always re-sign their All-Pros, especially when they drafted and developed them. Teams want their All-Pros and All-Pros like to stay with their original team, so both sides have a strong incentive to be flexible in contracts. It's easy to make a player the nominally highest paid player at his position while reducing the actual risk.

ET is the leader of the defense. Sherman is the histrionic, high-strung, diva cornerback, as corners and receivers often are. They're both the best at what they do.

[1] Pro Bowlers are a different story.

Earl shuts down almost the entire field. Sherman shuts down one (far) side. Love both of them, but since you're making me pick...

Earl hands down. Especially in regards to value if Sherman ('s agent) starts demanding Revis money.

If you have several all-pros coming up at the same time, you can't sign them all. If you have one or two all-pros, no problem. If you have them, plus other good players at crucial positions, you're not going to be able to keep them all, especially if they are QB's and CB's.
