Identity Crisis on offense.

The big problem obviously on offense is the OL. However, we have so many different formations I'm not sure if we are a:

"Power Offense" where Beast lines up in single back or power I and we soften up teams by running the ball and predicate passing off of play action.

"Finesse Offense" where we go four wide with Russ in shotgun (tell everyone we are passing) allowing Russ freedom to scramble when reads aren't open
and running some read option with Beast and Russ

"West Coast style offense" seems we do this on 3rd and short a lot with single or double tight ends and throw short to intermediate routes to Doug, Golden and occasionally to Rice

Tempo is crucial to an offense and we have had no tempo whatsoever this year. Part of this is because to run all the different styles listed above it takes massive amounts of substitutions and time. I would love to see Bevell simplify things, stick with what works and allow Russ to speed up the tempo on offense (trusting him more to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage).

2. Tempo is more important for up-tempo offenses like Philly, NE and Denver. Pete wants Russell to run a more deliberate offense, where he slowly goes through his checks before snapping the ball to make sure everyone's in the proper position, blocking assignments, etc. We wear out defenses with a nasty physical run game and chasing Russell around for four quarters, not by tempo.

It isn't a crisis.

You know how the defense has the personnel to look completely different vs different types of teams? The two types of offense you describe are vital to matching up with almost any defense.

It's called being multiple, and it isn't easy.

Would I prefer an up tempo offense? What does up tempo mean? If you mean getting to the line much faster so Wilson has a chance to get a longer look at the D and make an adjustment, hell yeah. If you mean hurry up, get a snap every 20 seconds, no way.

I personally like that we can slow it down and "Ground and Pound", OR speed it up and go "Speed/Read Option" style, OR "Dink and Dunk" it around for 3-5 yards at a time... sometimes I feel like the coaches use the first half to figure out what's most productive and then lessen the load and focus more on what works. Hence, the slower starts accompanied by the usual 4th quarter dominance ... Love that this team doesn't fit into a nice little box (ala. Denver).

By "tempo" I'm referring to time in and out of the huddle and getting to the line of scrimmage. Last thing we need with a beat up/inexperienced OL is a hurry up type offense. I just want to see tempo or rythym so drives can be sustained and Russ can audible to perfect plays and find weaknesses of the defense.

Also, we can show variety of styles on separate drives and still be difficult to prepare for. I'm talking about the drives where we go I formation two plays in a row, then we go four wide for a play or two then back to single back where we are trotting on two tight ends. Just seems to affect the rythym of the offense and drives stall.

Wow, ya know this is something I had not really thought of from an overall stand point and makes perfect sense now that you mention it. I think this has a lot to do w/ what frustrates me so much in the first half. Good catch.

I think this team is specifically built to create as much drag as possible on the opposing team, especially in the first half. Controlling the clock, making them compete for every inch. By making them exert so much extra effort early on, that you grind opponents to dust in the first half. Give them a wrestling match for the first 30 minutes to sap your opponent’s energy and take advantage of that fatigue in the latter half. It might not be the prettiest offense to watch, but it has paid dividends for this team.
