If you can't differentiate between expectations for a rookie head coach and a coach in his 13th season (last year) I really have no hope for you. Many people have issues with the Fire Pete crowd because their standards quickly shifted when MM came in. For example, our defense is currently on pace to be just as bad as any of the Clint Hurtt era. Yet people blamed Pete for random stuff like a lack of accountability, scheme, culture, etc. Now that those same issues have shown up under a new coach with many new starters? None of the above. Suddenly, we're seeing nuanced takes on talent and how the players don't fit the scheme and need time—the same arguments Pete's defenders made when we switched schemes in 2022/2023. Mike actually has more scheme fits than Hurtt in 2022.
The shifted expectations are also contradictory. Pete winning nine games wasn't good enough for these people, yet many of them are now preaching patience and lowered expectations for Mike. Meanwhile, Seattle has arguably the most talent it's had since 2020, and if PC were still here, anything short of a playoff win would be seen as a catastrophic failure.
It's kind of interesting to see these arguments evolve.
If you move the goalposts any further, Blair Walsh is going to end up making a kick by accident.
The defense was certainly underwhelming last season. I won't suggest otherwise, and as a veteran coach who has a reputation for defensive prowess, Pete deserved much of the blame for that.
You responded to Welshers assertion that the team "fought hard" by claiming that they gave up last season. In the second week of December, the Seahawks lost to their bitter rival 49ers for the second time in three weeks, a humiliating way to notch their fourth consecutive loss and suddenly fall to 6-7 and on the outside of the playoff picture, after beginning the year 5-2 and looking like a lock to play extra games. Again, Pete deserved plenty of criticism for how the season had seemingly become lost.
A team that "gave up" would have continued to compound their errors, tried to coast into the offseason, and probably have finished the year with a record of something like 7-10. This team, however, won three of their last four games, and in all three wins, they were facing a deficit inside the final two minutes (it was inside the final minute in two of those). Does that sound like a team that wasn't fighting? Even their loss, which was against a playoff team, was a tightly contested battle that ended with a one-score deficit. Heck, in only two minutes and 30 seconds of game time was either team leading by more than seven.
I don't blame anyone who thought it was time to move on from Pete after the season. I was on the fence myself. If someone is trying to say that the team was getting constantly outclassed, or that they had just given up on Pete though, I don't think reality matches with that.
Wright said that the team gave up?Even KJ Wright complained about the lack of effort, players looking distracted, and players not having Carrolls back and doing whatever they wanted last season. Looked obvious when I watched them.
Wright said that the team gave up?
Speaks highly of Schneider that the talent is so high that they are capable of winning late-season games in comeback fashion with no effort after giving up.
This is a solid take. Pete needed some time and so will Mike.I understand your sentiment. However id like to say that this team fell to its current state over the course of a handful of seasons and it won't be fixed correctly in a week. Someone said over the course of this season we'll see some good football and some pretty bad football. This makes sense to me.
I don't think MM has lost the locker room , I think the adversity is revealing the character of the players he has at the moment. Players that aren't going to cut it long term whether it's physical or emotional.
I can honestly say I remember a lot of frustrating games during PCs first couple of seasons , people were all over him but through the passage of time , they started
Getting better. Because we give the passage of time . It IS the passage of time.
It’s not all wrong and maybe I’m nitpicking but with all the injuries I’m not sure this current iteration is that much more talented than last years defense? You have two new linebackers on one year deals because there wasn’t a market for them. You have the same corners, Love is there and the Dline is very similar especially with Murphy out. Pete who the counter argument is saying is a defensive mastermind(not being snarky) and this defense was ranked 26,30,28 the past 3 years. We don’t have a massive overhaul? Now Murphy is a major investment but he hasn’t been on the field these past couple of weeks. When he was this unit was much better. Many people have issues with the Fire Pete crowd because their standards quickly shifted when MM came in. I never said MM failed. It's week 6. And if anything, I've set realistic expectations for him from the beginning, saying there was little evidence that he would come in and turn this defense around immediately. My expectation is a middle-of-the-road defense, and it is a wide road. It’s not all wrong and maybe I’m nitpicking but with all the injuries I’m not sure this current iteration is that much more talented than last years defense? I think it’s really early to say he’s failed because they struggled against the two best teams in the NFC. Let’s see where we’re at when the season is over.
That wasn’t directed at you, just at some people who talk as if he has. How much easier was it Detroit and the Niners are two of the best offenses in the league? Either way I could be wrong but I think they improve a tonI never said MM failed. It's week 6. Yeah. I think this defense is clearly more talented than last season. The front seven, in particular, when healthy, is significantly better. Williams only played ten games for Pete. They added a starting-caliber run-stuffer in Hankins and drafted Murphy. Hall was a developmental prospect who hardly played last season, but he is currently one of the best players on the team. Jenkins is a significant upgrade over Adams. Witherspoon is entering year 2. The linebackers are about the same, but both are better in coverage than Bobby. On paper, this unit is quite a bit better.
It is still early, but MM's defensive grades are eerily similar to Hurtt's, and Seattle has played a much easier offensive schedule thus far than last season. We've played two top-20 offenses, and if you remove the horrible Dolphins offense, we are giving up nearly 30 PPG.
There was something going on that we don't know about.Last season they gave up
This Seahawks team wishes it had Gus Bradley‘s jaguars defense. That's a quality sentiment of which I largely agree with. Unfortunately, we're not allowed to like Pete anymore. If we don't pretend to be unable to distinguish him from Tyrone Willingham, it makes it more difficult to keep up the delusion that we havnt become the reincarnation of the Gus Bradley Jaguars.
