Listen, some HOA's may work out. Ours certainly has been mostly a nightmare. I just won't gamble on it next time.

I do agree with you HOA's suck. I don't like mine and they don't even bug me. The issue is when you are on side streets - private roads and have common areas how are you going to collect money and pay for those. They are definately setup for misuse if not handled right which you unfortunately had examples about. So far ours has been managed right (knock knock) but you easily get misuse

I agree. Pick your battles. why not put the flag pole in your front yard (or back yard for that matter). But FWIW, that neighbor is a jerk.

Ok so I've already posted my HOA nightmare, devils advocate time..

Growing up, almost my entire childhood, lived next door to this woman who was like the horrible woman from the goonies. Further, she had about 12 chihuahuas that barked non-stop, had a deadly Rottweiler that almost ate my dads ear off and nearly killed a neighbor girl, they grew pot in their garage, never mowed the lawn, and used old toilets as flower pots.

So, HOA might have been cool there...

I didn't think you directing that comment at me personally. Even if you had been, I wouldn't take offense. It was great to have a chance to rant though!

We're at the point now where we are just putting our energy elsewhere. Like someone else said about the original story, pick your battles.

My philosophy is that when you pay my taxes for my property then you can tell me what to do on it.

The same yards have had the same weeds for 10 years.

Anyway, it's just time to work towards moving on. We jumped on the house after both being financially destroyed in divorces. Honestly, at the time we were amazed we passed the credit check. Of course, the builder had their own bank and financed us. Otherwise we may not have been approved at the time.

Oh the wonderful days of easy to get loans.......

Now we're fine credit wise.

I live in the Bay Area in California and heard about this on the radio. Even the folks here disagree with the HOA and that the HOA really needs to get a life. How idiotic are these folks?

I've since moved out of the neighborhood, but my former HOA didn't mind flags, just had a max of two flying at a given time. They had to be mounted to the home itself and not near the road or next to the driveway. The clause in the rules is within the same section as the political election signs. A bunch of people in The Woodlands fly an American flag and a Texas State flag, then they'll have a college banner that they'll hang over the garage on game days only. Never a peep of complaints.

Most folks here will attach flags to the eaves above the garage or will have a flagpole attached to a post or railing off of the front porch. If it were me, I'd rather have it up close where I could see it over next to the road anyway. Looking at that picture, there is a great spot on the front corner of his house to mount it. Why he put it where he did is confusing to me. I'd worry about a scorned opposing fan stealing it so easily.

That's so common it's not even funny. We had a HOA at my last house. My immediate neighbors were ok, but it happened to a lot of people. Americans are pussies now and are afraid of any conflict if it can hurt their feelings, so most folks would rather squeal to a higher authority (HOA) than actually go and talk with someone face to face. Very similar to all the internet tough guys you see.

As for someone's comment about "getting a life", lol that's the other issue I have with HOA's. They "employ" a few retired people to walk around and do neighborhood inspections. These people are usually bored out of their minds and enjoy walking around and narcing out their neighbors for excessive weeds and feel they are doing a community service. I caught one on my property once and in no uncertain terms told him that he'd be doing this from a walker sooner than he thought if I caught him illegally on my property again.

As for the flag, my HOA would only allow our country's flag, and the state flag (Nevada) to be flown without permission. Other than that you had to ask.....I couldn't even fly a Marine Corps flag without getting the "ok" from the Neighborhood Nazis.

Here is one to all of you that can't stand your HOA though. When it comes to putting up a Dish / DirectTV and antenna for OTA signals almost all HOAs says in the agreement that you can't do it without their permission. That article is NOT legal and is overruled by FCC rules specificially setting the rules about this. HOA rules cannot go against state or federal law and this one has been proved many times.

So don't let them stop you from who you select to put up a dish. Now I don't know if you can paint the dish in Seahawks colors

Mike: Do you have any source on that? I have a friend whose HOA says they can't get the oblong (HD signal) direcTV dish. Would love to forward that to them.
