-- I have seen multiple posters reference Matt Flynn as an almost comp for Sam Darnold. My bigger fear is a Scott Mitchell, who lit it up as the Dolphins QB when Marino was hurt, then was an absolute disaster when he signed as the savior with the Lions.

-- But that is the downside. What if, just for fun, we considered the upside. With the goal always being to win another Super Bowl, it got me thinking about free agent quarterbacks who have done so. Unfortunately the list is small. Just 6. Four were planned as starters, the other two were signed as backups)

Brady with the Bucs (Hall of Famer)
Brees with the Saints (Hall of Famer)
Manning with the Broncos (Hall of Famer)
Brad Johnson for the Bucs (um....no)
Trent Dilfer for the Ravens (brought in to back up Tony Banks, who was bad)
Nick Foles with the Eagles (brought in to back up Carson Wentz, who got hurt)

-- So, I think what we hope for, is that Darnold is the next Brad Johnson, and we build a great team around him. Hey, Johnson was a very solid NFL starter, and had played for the Vikings previously as well. Time will tell.

You left one out. Jim Plunkett. Plunkett was drafted in 1971 #1 overall by the patriots. He played for NE for 5 years and was then traded to the 49ers in 1976 and played for two years. The 49ers released him and the Raiders signed him as a free agent. He played 8 years with the Raiders winning a Super Bowl and MVP.
Plunkett is the comp to Darnold.

Matt Flynn was beat out by a guy that took us to two superb owls. Trent Dilfer could not wrestle the job away from Matt Hasselbeck. Both went to a superbowl. If the Vicki's were so good why did they spend over one hundred million on their oline? Now their 2nd year rookie will take them to the playoffs?
It's a crap shoot. We are gonna feild a dynamic defense. You gotta have faith. Faith faith.....

-- The board can correct me if I am wrong, but Dilfer DID wrestle the job away from Hass, because Holmgren had had enough of Matt's resistance. But then Dilfer ruptured the Achilles in Dallas, and Matt got his job back, and learned from the benching. I could be wrong, I am getting quite old.

I don't see the Flynn comparison at all. They had much different profiles, and were taken on opposite ends of the draft with much different expectations. Flynn rose above the athletic limitations that caused him to be considered a fringe prospect at best, Darnold was a top pick who couldn't handle the lights, but got things to click later, and we're hoping he gets closer to what he was originally projected to be.

That's how I remember it. Hass looked horrific at first, but clearly learned from his benching and took ownership of the job when he got his next chance. The end of the 2002 season was just incredible.

I remember at the end of that season when Matt got his job back. There was a moment when he jumped up and got in Rodney Harrison's face for another one of his questionable hits. At that moment I knew he was our guy. I think Matt was so underrated. His receivers never helped him out. Jackson and KRob dropped everything, and I think we all remember Jeremy Steven's performance in the SB. I miss that Holmgren offense

Give me Sam Plunkett or Jim Darnold.

I didn't think Mitchell was a disaster in Detroit. He had a year where he threw for 4300 yards and 32 TD's and made the post season. He played roughly for 4 total seasons there and two of them were winning seasons. I think the team stunk more than he did.

No relevance to anything,,,,,,,just saying.

I think a lot forget that the 9ers and Shanahan praised Darnold a bunch when he was with them. Then he went to the vikings and had an amazing year. I think there is more to Darnold than we've seen so far. Hoping for the best.
