When Russell was drafted how many of you actually had followed/heard of him? For me I had to look his highlights up on You Tube. Could JS have his under the radar QB in mind this year? Which one?

I knew of him because of his year in Wisconsin. I am a PSU fan and am aware of BIG10 players to some extent. I never heard of him while he was at NC State though.

He had 33 TDs to 4 INTs for a top-10 ranked program that won a power conference and went to the Rose Bowl.

You couldn't slide a sheet of paper under that radar.

I think he was pretty well known by the time the draft started. He had everything going for him except for the prototypical size. And the size thing was talked about a lot.

In three decades of following the draft closely and about 25 years of actively posting on Seahawks boards, among players we took after the first round, Russ was almost definitely the one Hawks fans had been clamoring for most pre-draft. The only other player even in that argument is Shaquem Griffin. I remember joking a number of times during that draft season how it was apparently illegal for a Hawks fan to make a mock draft without giving the team Russell Wilson at some point. The difference was that most of us thought he would go fifth or sixth round, so it was a surprise to see him go in the third, but there was much celebrating on the message boards.

All this goes to show how little anyone outside NFL teams actually know about draft prospects.

The media hated the Russ pick, either becasue he was a completely wasted pick or we could have picked him up in a later round if we really wanted him. The later was disproved when the Eagles said they would have taken him at the very next pick.

The Jets and Redskins said the same in regards to their next picks.

The teams don't know a lot either. Everybody is lying and there's considerable guesswork involved. I'll bet a number of them thought it was a reach too. GMs are consider huge successes if they hit on 30% of their picks. It's an extremely difficult process.

If you watched college football, or even just bowl games that year on New Year’s Day then you knew about Russ. The question was would his game translate to the NFL. He answered that in spades.

I went nuts when we got him and posted on FB that he was going to beat out Flynn and be a star. I’ll post it for the doubters lol.

I’ve missed on a bunch too so this isn’t a flex. I thought Christine Michael was going to run all over the rest of the league

I watched him play in the rose bowl, and that was a hell of a game. My buddy, who is a die hard Broncos fan, was watching the draft with me that weekend. We were both waiting to see if Kellen Moore was going to be drafted lol.

The Broncos picked Brock Osweiler and I was flipping him so much crap haha. Then we took Russ, and he started Flipping me crap.. And to be honest I was totally in on Flynn. I got humbled pretty quickly during the preseason though. Had a great run until he married Ciara, seems like that's when it all came crashing down

There are two different elements to picking the the draft (real or imaginary). Predicting the impact the player will have in the drafting team and predicting where a player will go in the draft. I think the NFL teams are significantly better than the media at the later although I think there are some picks that surprise everyone teams included (I'm thinking Danial Jones not RW3). Predicting player impact I agree is very hard and there are a lot of misses, (depending how you define "success", it is rare to pick the very best player available in the draft but rare to get someone incapable of starting in the 1st round).
