Homers vs: “baiting” trolls.

Fans are often called “homers” when they show loyalty and support optimistic expectations for their favorite team. That makes me a homer as I am very optimistic about the coming seasons. I have recently noticed on several sites and message boards that some of the other fan bases (most notably San Francisco), that way over hype their own players while at the same time bad mouthing Seahawk players, coaches and the Seahawks team accomplishments in general. I’d say that is fairly normal, however, baiting others into long drawn out dialogs about crap that has nothing to do with this season and repeatedly calling people vulgar names to me is pretty obnoxious and reason enough to “not reply” in spite of the bait.

I recently read ALL of the (many) article comments on several “national” sites (ESPN, etc.). It was obvious to me that (especially) the San Francisco fan base were exceptionally obnoxious and more than willing to bait, disparage and call people names (including many nasty and vulgar names). I also came to the conclusion that the majority of those disparaging remarks came from only a few posters. Those posters were obviously there ONLY to argue, harass and demean anyone that they could. In other words they were “baiting” responders into many stupid arguments and then in multiple posts going on to claim their franchise is unbeatable, their players are the best, how stupid conflicting arguments are, vulgar name calling and just a lot of pure BS. I have fairly thick skin, but some of these guys tick me off just reading their crap.
I held my cool and did not reply to any of the referenced comments although I was often tempted.

My conclusion from all of this is that for me at least, I’d prefer not to comment at all to so many of these obvious baiting attempts. I intend to let them argue amongst themselves and stay out of these arguments (although some on this site MAY enjoy same). These obnoxious fans will only believe their own BS and I suspect that many of them are about 13 years old and delight in pissing people off with their banter.

The Seahawks will show them all what a super bowl WIN feels like - this year. Who cares what happened in the past decades or how many rings grandpa has? The current truth will be decided on the football field, not in blog comments and blind-eyed support of “supposed” fans. Seems to me these guys prefer to just argue rather than have any meaningful dialog about football.

How do other Seahawk fans feel about this issue? Will not replying to the BS posts make them dry up over time? Anyone else noticed that on some “national” web-sites (as well as some Seahawks web-sites) these type of posters are on the increase lately? How does everyone else handle this on .net? This off-season is so darn long.......... :49ersmall:

I just ignore them on the national sites and try to get them removed or toned down if they visit here. It would be like trying to argue with a statue and the troll has the advantage. He knows your weak points, will spew the general cynicism about your team (ie No trophies, PEDs, cheater ... yada yada yada). Some are pretty witty and are good at giving the abuser some abuse. If you are such a person, then have at it.

I think it is childish but it isn't something that is limited to one team's fans or just one sport. I am also not a young buck anymore, so I don't want to ram my head into the wall just to prove a point. All blowhards, absent their team actually winning it all, are subject to being featured in a meltdown video with them sobbing their eyes out. Too bad someone has to win because it usually allows some dickhead to ride the coat tails and try to take the superior position.

It's pretty easy to determine if an opponent fan provides any legitimate input or they're just trolling. Unfortunately, some people have nothing better to do than to troll opposing boards. I enjoy the banter with you guys and I completely recognize that Seahawks are dangerous and it will be a dog fight in the NFCW this year.

Additionally, both teams have young, talented QBs, enigmatic HCs, great running attacks, and star-studded defenses. The offseason is long and with the lack of any substantial information (other than the Crabtree injury), and people rehash stupid arguments.

Ninerbuff: Thanks very much for your comments. I appreciate good dialog and a good back & forth when the nasty BS is left out. Not all fans have a similar positive approach. we can't really hate all - for the actions of just a few, but some of those guys are really "........".

If you read the comments on youtube/ESPN/4chan etc. you deserve the heartburn/stress you get in response. Seriously, it's like sticking your hand into a live garbage disposal and then getting pissed that you lost a couple fingers.

Here's where you lost, "I held my cool and did not reply to any of the referenced comments although I was often tempted."

I too avoid the comment sections of those sites. If you want some fine trolling check out what this guy does on craigslist ads :D

Speaking of three hour tours....Hope Harbaugh enjoys his next three hour tour of Qwest Field next season as much as he enjoyed the last one.

There's no reason to ever stress or lose your cool on those boards. You can't take anything personally and you have to dish it better than they do.

I don't go to non Seahawk sites unless to lurk. As for opposing fans here and on other Seahawk sites I mostly ignore. Keeps the blood pressure in line. :D

The only time I ever trolled was kind of by accident. This was back in the 20th century and we had these new "chat rooms" I think they were called. I was a student sports reporter for a small newspaper (circulation 6,500). While waiting for an editor to look over my latest story, I found a "chat room" where the topic was the newly formed Big 12. It was neat. People from different geographical places were talking about which school's football team would win the conference. I hopped on and jokingly said I thought Baylor would win. This was when Baylor was by far the weakest link of the 4 Texas schools to join the conference (sure enough, it would take Baylor another 10 years to mount even 5 wins in a single season).

Anyway, the fiery responses I got from these anonymous chatters was so entertaining, I pretended that I was serious and started listing reasons. As the others got more and more angry, I got bored and decided that was enough for me. Those 10 minutes were all the trolling enjoyment I needed for a lifetime. Of course, back in '96 we didn't have a catchy name for it. We just called it "wasting time."
